Their Rejected Queen

His beast practically glows with his coat of bronze. His amber eyes are almost entirely golden now, bright with intensity as if what he had just done had awakened something inside his wolf.

I, however, am a crumpled thing wrapped up in a silk robe. Arwan holds me to his chest like I’m something precious that he’d almost lost.

He carries me all the way to Godric’s tent, and the shifter holding the camera wisely keeps his distance. Godric gives him a snarl before venturing inside.

“That’s the last we saw of Arwan,” Sofia informs me. “And there’s something about Godric, but I’ll… let you see that one for yourself.”

The screen blips off, and she pockets the channel crystal. I stare at the ground and try to pull up any memories of Arwan bringing me to the tent, but it’s all black.

“What happens next?” I ask.

“I don’t know,” she whispers. Her fingers brush mine, and I take them in a comforting squeeze.

“Why did Godric let you tend to me instead of sitting here himself?” I ask.

She shrugs. “Maybe he thinks I have a better bedside manner.”

That’s probably an understatement.

“And Arwan?”

She bites her lip. “Renalt told me that the royals have to stick with the king. But once he knows you’re awake, there’s probably going to be another trial. You’ve drawn too much interest.”

Damn it.

“And what does the king plan on putting us through next?”

“Renalt didn’t say.”

Probably because he’s not allowed to. I don’t know what his relationship is with Sofia, but she’s only just met him.

He’ll still be bound by stupid court politics.

But I know someone who isn’t.

“I gotta go,” I say as I force myself to my feet again. Wobbling, Sofia steadies me before I march over to the other section and grab some clothes.

“Seriously, why aren’t you lying down right now?” she asks.

Doubling back for my vials, I ignore the one for healing and pluck out two others.

Strength.

And the purple tonic Ze’ev had given me.

“There’s someone I need to talk to.”

CHAPTER 26

After a cold bath and a few swigs of both potions, I’m as good to go as I’m going to be.

When I exit the tent, there aren’t any Alphas like Sofia had mentioned.

Well, there is one Alpha.

A wolf of perfectly bronze fur lifts his head from his paw and gazes at me with intelligent eyes.

“Have you been in wolf form this whole time?” I ask him.
