She’s mine. Not mine in the fragile human sense of rings and promises that can be undone with a signature.
Mine like territory. Mine like pack. Woven into what I am.
The bond is sealed. The mark is permanent. Her nervous system is now wired to mine in a way that can’t be undone, that transcends distance or time or the opinions of anyone who isn’t us.
She will feel my emotions as undertones in her own. She will feel physical pain if we’re separated for too long. She will carry my scent on her skin for the rest of her life, invisible to humans but unmistakable to every wolf who comes within ten feet of her. They’ll know. Every wolf in every city, every pack on every continent. They’ll scent me on her and they’ll know she belongs to someone who will kill for her without hesitation and without regret.
The wolf is quiet. Not pacing or pressing against my skull the way he has been for weeks. Quiet the way a lake is quiet after a storm. The kind of stillness that comes from total satisfaction, from a need so deep and so fundamental that its fulfillment changes the landscape around it. He got what he wanted. She’s marked. She’s ours. And the peace in my chest is so complete that it feels like a new organ, something I grew tonight, something I didn’t have before her.
I breathe against the wound and smell us. Not her scent and my scent. A new thing. Our scent, blended at the point of contact where my mouth broke her skin and the bond sealed through blood.
She smells like vanilla and warm skin and underneath both of those, for the first time, she smells like wolf. Like me. Like the forest after rain and the ozone edge of a coming storm.
I press my lips against the bite and feel the satisfaction roll through me like a wave.
She wanted me. She told me to stop holding back. She said please with a desperation that tore through my restraint like claws through paper. She arched into me and pulled me deeper and came screaming my name, and in that moment, at that peak, when her body was shaking and her walls were clenching around me and every part of her was open and unguarded and mine, I bit down.
I’d do it again. Tonight, tomorrow, a thousand times. The wolf doesn’t hesitate when the mate is ready and the bond is ripe and the moment is right. And the moment was right. I felt it in her body, in the way she crested, in the way her scent bloomed into something dark and willing and absolute. She was ready. Her body knew even if her mind didn’t have the language for it yet.
I run my tongue along the wound. She shivers in her sleep and presses back against me, her body seeking mine on instinct. The bond is already working. Her nervous system is recalibrating around the new connection, learning the shape of my heartbeat alongside hers. By tomorrow the integration will be deeper. By next week it will be seamless. She’ll feel me in her chest the way she feels her own breath, constant and automatic and necessary.
Her body is changing. I can sense it through the mark, through the bond itself. The bite changed her biology the moment the bond sealed. Her aging will slow. Not immediately, not visibly, but the process has already begun. She’ll have years before she notices. Decades before anyone else understands. Her friends will age around her and she will remain, the way wolves remain. Centuries instead of decades. A lifetime that matches mine.
I gave her that. Without asking. Without explaining.
Good.
Some things shouldn’t require a committee. Some things are too fundamental, too necessary, too rooted in what the bond is and what we are to be submitted for approval. I am a wolf. She is my mate. The bite is how wolves claim their mates. It’s not a question. It’s a biological imperative as basic as breathing, and I don’t apologize for breathing either.
The wolf rumbles in agreement. Low, satisfied, a vibration I feel in my jaw where it presses against her shoulder. The man and the wolf are in alignment for the first time since she walked into my office, and the unity of it is intoxicating. No more internal war. No more the man wanting and the wolf demanding. We want the same thing. We have the same thing. She’s in our bed, wearing our mark, breathing our air.
Ours.
But.
The man isn’t stupid, even when he’s sated. The wolf deals in instinct. The man deals in consequence. And the consequence is coming.
She’s going to ask. About what it means, what it does, what it changed in her body without her knowledge. She may not have the specifics of the mate bond, but she’s smart enough to connect the bite to the pull to the weeks of escalating desire that brought her to this bed.
When she makes that connection, she’s going to be furious.
Not because the feelings aren’t real. They are. I know this with the certainty of a century of reading people. What Sophia feels for me started before the bond had time to build. Her desire, her fascination, her stubborn refusal to be intimidated by what I am. Those are hers. The bond amplified them but it didn’t create them.
But I know she won’t see it that way. Not at first. At first she’ll see deception. She’ll see a man who knew what was happening to her body and chose not to tell her. She’ll see the mark as a brand, the bond as a leash, the weeks of proximity and touch as a calculated campaign to engineer her desire.
She’ll call it manipulation.
She won’t be wrong.
I knew touch strengthened the bond. I knew proximity made the pull harder for her to resist. I used both because I wanted her close.
I also claimed her. Those things are true. What I did not do was manufacture something that wasn’t already there. The bond didn’t create the fire between us. It gave the fire oxygen.
Will she think of it like that? Not at first, if I know the way she thinks. And the gap between my truth and her perception is the space where I could lose her.
That’s the only thing that concerns me tonight. Not whether I was right to mark her. Not whether the bond is real. Not whether I should have told her first.
I didn’t because I wanted the mark more than I wanted the argument that would come before it. I can live with that decision.
