She eventually got up and wandered farther into the field, smelling the flowers and looking happier than I had seen her since she arrived in France.
“Damn, I wish I had my phone.”
I pulled mine from my pocket and held it out to her.
She looked at the phone and then at me. “You serious?”
“Take it.”
Azaria grabbed it with a smirk. “You not scared I’ll text a drug dealer?”
I laughed. “Ain’t no drug dealers out here, baby.”
“You don’t know who I know.”
“I know enough.”
She walked farther into the lavender and started taking pictures. She took a few of herself before coming back toward me with my phone still in her hand.
“Come here.”
“For what?”
“I want a picture.”
I got up and walked over to her.
Azaria held the phone in front of us and moved closer to my chest. Right when she took the picture, I kissed the side of her neck.
She laughed before looking at the screen.
“That’s cute.”
“Give me my phone back.”
“Relax. I’m not going through it.”
I laughed. “I’m not worried.”
She gave it back, and we returned to the blanket. Tommy had left us a bag of snacks, so Azaria started eating homemade kettle chips while she went back to drawing.
I watched her for a while before the lack of sleep finally caught up with me.
At some point, I fell asleep.
When I opened my eyes again, Azaria was giggling.
“What?”
“Boy, you were sleeping like a baby.”
I rubbed my face and checked the time. Almost thirty minutes had passed.
“I needed a power nap.”
“Your guard came over and said it’s time to get back on the road.”
“Alright.”
