Aimee could not believe Kelly-Anne.

She fumed as Ammo drove them home. When they reached the house, she stormed her way inside, not even waiting for him to open the truck door for her.

She fully expected him to stop her, to scold her, but he didn’t say anything, which further proved that he was drawing away from her.

At least he’d stuck up for her at the lawyer’s office.

Although he probably shouldn’t have threatened Kelly-Anne the way he had, especially not in front of Matthew.

“Can you believe her?” Aimee said as she set down her handbag on the kitchen table and moved to the fridge, but she didn’t feel like iced tea or water.

No, this felt like she needed something stronger.

But they were completely out of beer. Great. And she didn’t have anything stronger in the house. She paced up and down the kitchen.

“Does she think that I’m sitting on billions here? Look at this place. It’s falling down around my ears. You were right, the railing’s about to fall over. The roof probably needs replacing. The oven light doesn’t even work.”

Okay, that was a small thing in comparison to the others, but it really annoyed her.

“You know what? She’s welcome to it,” she said. “Welcome to her share of the profits, provided the baby is Charlie’s.”

What was she saying? What did it matter? Was she really going to force Kelly-Anne to have a DNA test? Was it even worth the fight?

“Heck, for all I know, there’s not even going to be any profit if we sell this house. I’m not going to spend any time or money fixing it up now, that’s for sure.”

Ammo just stood there, staring down at the wall. He looked like he was deep in thought. Was he ever going to talk to her again? Maybe not. Maybe that was a good thing.

Should she ask him if he was going to leave now? Did she really want to know?

Before she could decide, her phone rang. Aimee grabbed her handbag and drew it out, staring down at the name on the screen in surprise. Why would Dan be calling her?

She hadn’t exactly left her job at the bar under the best circumstances, so she couldn’t imagine that this would be some sort of courtesy call.

Don’t answer.

That would be the sensible thing to do.

But curiosity was too much for her.

“What do you want? Did I leave something at the bar?” she said as she answered the call.

“Oh, good. Aimee, listen. I know we didn’t leave things under the best circumstances. Things were said on both of our behalf that we didn’t really mean.”

“Uh-huh,” she said dryly. “What do you want?”

“I need you to come into work.”

She let out a bark of laughter. “And why would I do that after what happened last time? You didn’t even try to protect me from those guys. You never protected me. I’m not coming back to work for you. I’m not safe there.”

Aimee was aware of a pair of eyes on her, but she didn’t look up. She needed to prove to Ammo that she could take care of this, that she could look after herself.

“I know I messed up and I’m going to do better, I promise. Look, I’m really desperate. I need some help. I’ve just had a big group of bikers come in, and they all want food. We’re overrun here because Crystal just called in sick.”

Well, of course Crystal had called in sick, she was the most unreliable waitress on the planet. Aimee couldn’t count the number of times she’d had to go in on short notice to cover for the other woman.

“I don’t work for you anymore, Danny. I’m under no obligation to come in and help you out. Why would I care after the way you treated me?”
