Daddy’s Fortitude

“Are you all right?” she asked him curiously as she cradled Kevin against her.

Was he all right? He wasn’t entirely sure. Now he was the one who felt like he’d woken up in the Twilight Zone.

“I’m not sure.”

“Do you need to come in? Have a seat? I’ll get you a glass of water, or maybe you’d prefer some sweet tea.”

She turned away, leaving the door open. Was she seriously just going to let him walk into her house? He was a stranger. She didn’t know who he was. He could walk right in and assault her.

Thank fuck he’d turned up when he had. It was clear that this girl needed someone to watch over her. And with Charlie gone, well, that task lay on his shoulders.

Ammo walked into the house, glancing around. It was tidy, unlike the yard, which was an overgrown mess. But everything inside the house was worn down.

Not that there was much stuff. He glanced into the living room to see a worn couch and an old TV. The carpet was worn down so much that he could see the padding.

There were places where the wallpaper was coming off. It looked crinkled and old.

He moved further down the hallway. The house was freezing cold even though it was pretty warm outside.

Ammo stepped into an old kitchen that had to be original to the house. Aimee was pouring a glass of water and another of sweet tea.

He couldn’t see Kevin, so he guessed he was back in her hair.

“Oh, there you are. Here, have a seat. Drink something.”

He stood there and stared at her. “You just let me into your house.”

“Yep, you should have a drink. You look a little pale.”

“I look pale?” he asked.

He wondered if she’d looked in a mirror recently. She was so pale she appeared gray, and there were dark smudges under her eyes, as though she hadn’t been sleeping much lately.

Then again, she had just lost her husband, so he guessed that sleep was hard to come by. He should probably treat her a bit more carefully.

“Yeah, you do, kind of.” She sat down at the table and reached for the glass of sweet tea, gulping it down.

“You just let me walk into your house when you have no idea who I am. Don’t you know how dangerous that is?” he said as he walked closer to the table and crossed his arms over his chest.

Yeah, he might need to treat her a bit more delicately, but that didn’t mean he was going to let her get away with such foolish behavior. She could get herself really hurt by doing things like that.

“But it’s not like you’re going to hurt me.”

He raised his eyebrows in amazement. “What makes you think that?”

Please don’t let her say it was his aura or that she had a feeling.

“Because you rescued me earlier. So you’re hardly going to rescue me from getting hit by a truck, then turn around and hurt me, are you?”

Okay, that wasn’t what he’d expected her to say, and he had to admit that there was some logic to her thinking.

But that still didn’t mean she could be nonchalant with her safety. That wasn’t acceptable to him.

“All right. I get what you were thinking, but just because I rescued you earlier doesn’t mean that I might not hurt you later.”

She frowned. “I think it’s exactly what it means.”

“No, that’s not what it means.”
