Birds chirped noisily outside the window, the morning sun slanting across the bed. Phoebe rolled over in his arms, facing him like she had the night before. But now it was day and the whiskey had long ago worn off.
She eyed him warily.
“Morning,” he said. He couldn’t help the grin tugging at his lips.
“Morning.” Her voice was raspy and sexy as hell in the morning, but Theo didn’t dare move closer. Just kept his arm draped over her waist where it had been all night. She didn’t return the smile, just narrowed her eyes at him. “Theo, what the hell are we doing?”
“A trial period?” he said, daring to tug her a little closer. She let him.
“And you really think this is a good idea?” Her question turned breathy at the end as Theo dipped his head and dragged his lips along her collarbone.
Right now, he thought it was a fucking brilliant idea.
“Yes, I do.”
She squirmed against him when his breath tickled the bare skin at her throat. He nipped her neck, her shoulder. He wanted to stay all day in this little nymph’s bed with her. He didn’t give a fuck about seers or wolf attacks or his damn brothers.
This was all he wanted.
Fee’s breathy sighs, her warm body, her hands roving across his back and shoulders until she dug her fingers into his curls. He had waited ten fucking years to hold her like this. And now he never wanted to let go.
Let Rafe think he was a fuck-up. Let Knox think he was a loser. Let his whole pack believe he was the runt, the failure, the coward.
This was all that mattered.
He ran his hands down Fee’s body, cupping her ass and pulling her flush against him. She fit so perfectly here, tucked into him. Why had he not kept her here this whole time?
“Theo, wait.” She put a hand to his chest. “Hold on.”
“What is it?”
Fee wriggled free of his arms and sat up. She ran a hand through her hair, making it stand up in messy spikes on her head. One strap of her tank top slid down her shoulder. The sun found her and lit up a halo around her head.
“This is crazy.”
“So?” He put his hands behind his head and grinned up at her. He couldn’t fucking help it. Sleeping next to Fee put him in such a good mood. Even if she was currently looking down at him like this whole thing had been a mistake and she was contemplating running far away from him. Even if he had no idea what the hell he was doing.
He grabbed her hand, planting a kiss on her palm.
“What’s a little snuggling between friends?”
She huffed a laugh. “I remember more than snuggling. I wasn’t that drunk.”
He sat up. “Good. Me, neither. And I’m dead sober now and I still think this is a good idea, Fee.” He twined their fingers together. “Let’s just see where things go.”
“I think we both know where things are going to go, Theo.”
His cock perked back up at that promise.
“So, let’s stop fighting it.” He leaned toward her and she met his gaze.
“What happens when this all blows up in our faces?”
“What makes you think it will?”
She raised a skeptical eyebrow.
“Fee.” He scooted closer until their knees were touching. “I was a mess back then. Please don’t punish me for it anymore.”
