“Your favorite.”
Fee grinned. She liked Spit because it was fast and she was fast. Faster than Theo, anyway.
“I think you should have to play left-handed,” he said. “To give me a fighting chance.” He slurped some noodles into his mouth and then winced at the heat.
Fee shook her head with a laugh. “Okay, I’ll play left-handed if that makes you feel better. But you remember I’m ambidextrous, right?”
Theo crinkled his nose. “I forgot about that. You should play blindfolded then.”
“I can’t play if I can’t see the cards!”
“Then maybe I would finally win,” he said with a laugh.
Fee shook her head and split the deck. “Here, wolfy. Let’s just play.” They both laid out their cards in rows and piles in front of them and then put their remaining half of the deck in the middle.
“Ready?” Theo asked.
“Yep.”
“One, two, three, spit.”
Fee’s fingers flew over the cards while Theo fumbled with his, nearly knocking over his bowl of soup. Fee giggled as they played.
“You’re so graceful as a wolf,” she said. “You’d think you’d be better at this.”
Theo huffed, still struggling to keep up. Fee only had a few cards left to get rid of before she won the round.
“This game doesn’t really employ any wolf skills.”
“I win!”
Theo sighed.
Fee reset the deck.
They played, laughing and teasing until Theo had lost too many times and Fee was tired of beating him. It was nice. It reminded her of how their friendship used to be before things got complicated.
Back when they’d just liked spending time with each other.
“What now?” she asked, clearing the bowls. Theo put the cards away.
“I found a book of crossword puzzles.”
Fee frowned. “I’m bad at those.”
“I know.” Theo grinned.
She dropped back on the couch beside him, and he pulled a blanket over their laps.
“Okay, one across: undergoes a chemical change.”
“Um … like Botox?”
Theo laughed. “I don’t think so, no.”
Fee sighed.
“How about this one? Bowling venue.”
