“Do you know where the fuck we are?”

The laughter burst from her mouth, breaking the tension of the moment. Her shoulders slumped in relief and Theo felt the same release in his body.

“Not really,” she confessed.

“Shit.”

“Looks like we’re entering another town. Maybe someone here can direct us.”

“Let’s hope so.”

Half a day in the car with Fee and he was already losing his grip on reality.

And the reality was, he still didn’t think he deserved her. They needed to find Lena and fast.

Chapter Eight

Phoebe squeezed her eyes shut, replaying their Truth or Dare conversation over in her mind while Theo went to ask for directions at a gas station. What do you really want? Why the hell had she said that?

What did she think he was going to say? That he wanted her? That the rules of a childish game would force him to actually tell the truth?

Sometimes, she could almost forget that she wasn’t supposed to want Theo anymore, or that he ever broke her heart in the first place.

Sometimes, if she tried hard enough, she could forget that she was angry and hurt and humiliated. But she’d been fooled once. She couldn’t do it again just because Theo’s body next to hers made her ache. She couldn’t give in to this thing between them just because she couldn’t get this werewolf off her mind.

This thing between them was too big for half measures. If Theo wanted her, he’d have to prove it. He’d have to say it. Tell her the truth, say all the things he never did.

Theo yanked open the passenger side door and climbed back in, pulling her from her thoughts.

“We got turned around somehow,” he grumbled. “We’re still a ways out from the resort.”

Fee pretended to be surprised by this information.

“Oh. Shoot.”

He narrowed his eyes at her like he knew she was full of shit but had no evidence to prove it.

“What town is this?” she asked. “Because Ruby said there was a movie theater that they used to stop at on their way to the cabins.”

Theo blinked. “A movie theater?”

“Yeah, she thought maybe we could ask there if they’d seen Lena.”

“Ruby thought that?”

“Yes! God, what’s with the third degree?” She squirmed in her seat under Theo’s stare. How the hell was she supposed to keep this up for days? Although the movie-theater thing wasn’t a lie. Ruby had mentioned an old theater they used to go to sometimes with their aunt if the weather was rainy on their vacations. And maybe Fee just added the part about Ruby saying they should stop there to look for Lena.

But that was more of a fib than a lie, really.

Okay, fine, so Theo wasn’t the only one struggling with the truth.

“We’re in Blue River right now.”

“Oh, great! I think it’s the next town over. Buckle up!”

They drove in silence to Eagle Ridge. Theo didn’t seem in the mood for games anymore and honestly, neither was she.

Ruby was right about the old single-screen theater in the center of town. The marquee out front was missing several letters, but Fee was pretty sure they were showing Little Miss Sunshine. One of her favorites. But she figured asking Theo to stay for the evening showing would be pushing her luck too far for one day.
