Fee nodded in satisfaction. “Okay, now you ask me.”
“Truth or Dare.”
“Truth.”
Well, this should be interesting. It was hard to tell when Fee was lying, but sometimes he could catch it. A flick of her gaze to the side, a quick lick of her lips.
“Are you sleeping with Amethyst?”
“Not anymore,” she said with a cheeky grin. No sign of a lie.
“I knew it! I knew you two were a thing.” Ever since Theo learned that Fee didn’t have a preferred gender for her partners, he’d had a hard time not wondering which of her friends were friends and which were … more than that.
Phoebe rolled her eyes. “We were very briefly a thing. Barely a thing. And now we’re just friends.”
He had no right to be, but he was relieved by that answer. He and Phoebe were alike in one way; neither of them kept lovers around for very long.
“What about you?” she asked.
“Me and Amethyst? No.”
“Ha. Ha. That’s not what I meant. Who are you … you know … currently.”
“Not fair, Fee. I never said truth.”
“Oh, come on.”
He shrugged even though Fee wasn’t looking at him. He could be casual about this. He could tell Fee the truth. “There isn’t anyone.”
Fee’s eyes widened, although to her credit she did keep them on the road.
“Really?”
“Don’t act so surprised. I’m in a bit of a dry spell,” he said, like the reason for his dry spell wasn’t sitting right next to him.
“A dry spell? You?” She said it like she’d never heard of anything so outlandish. God, did she really think of him like everyone else did? Sure, most of it was based in truth but he always thought that Fee had seen past all the gossip about his … exploits. She’d seen the real him.
“Why is that so shocking?”
Fee shrugged. “You just always seem to have … someone.”
“Not lately.” Not in a year. Not since that night when Fee took care of him and he broke her heart in return.
“So how long has it been?” she asked.
“It’s been a while now.” She didn’t need to know how long. She didn’t need to know she was the reason.
“Why?”
“Why what? Why have I decided to stop fucking everything in sight?” Theo shrugged again. “Stopped being fun, I guess.” A major understatement.
Theo didn’t like to sleep alone. Probably something to do with the fact that his father’s favorite punishment for him was to force Theo to spend the night away from the pack. Young and cold and scared, those were the worst nights of his life. He still didn’t allow himself to think about it. Or he tried not to, anyway.
For years a soft, warm body next to him was the goal. Didn’t really matter who, didn’t really matter if he saw them again afterwards. As long as everyone was having fun, he was happy. Or happy enough, anyway.
But after spending that night with Fee, just sleeping beside her, just holding her.
No, he couldn’t stomach having anyone else next to him now.
