“And?”

“And I’d like to know how you actually think it could work.”

“Why should I tell you? You’re not in my pack anymore. I have no reason to give a shit about you.”

“That’s real sweet, brother, but whether you like it or not, Rafe pulled me into this whole thing and now I want to know.”

Knox glanced at him, his silver eyes flashing in the dark. “Why did you leave?”

Theo blinked. That wasn’t at all what he’d expected Knox’s next move to be.

“What the fuck do you mean? I left because … because…”

“Because you thought I would kill you.”

“You wanted to be the Alpha.”

“And now I am. But only because you and Rafe ran.” Another cold smirk. “A rather unsatisfying victory.”

“What else could we have done? I was tired of fighting you.”

“You think I wasn’t tired?” Knox let out a low chuckle. “You think I wasn’t just as exhausted from our father’s fucking games? We could have done things differently.”

They stood side by side. They looked nothing alike, him and his oldest brother, but their blood ran the same.

“But we didn’t.”

Knox blew out a sigh. “We didn’t.”

“Why do you need Lena? What’s going on with the Highlanders?”

Knox’s gaze shifted from Theo’s face to the street. He looked placid. But Theo knew from experience there was plenty happening beneath the surface.

“There’s money.”

“What?”

Knox’s gaze returned to his. “The pack has money. Lots of it. The old bastard had been hoarding it for years.”

“Holy shit. So, while we were all living in tents, he was just … what? Sitting on millions?”

“Basically. Yeah.” Knox ran a hand through his hair.

“Why the hell would he do that? And where did it all come from?”

“It came from us. The money we brought in from working over the years, some went to supplies and some went into his secret cache. It’s been adding up and we all just … trusted him to handle it. But it wasn’t just him. Alphas have been doing it for decades, a couple centuries probably.” Knox shrugged. “I can’t pretend to know what the old man was thinking, but right before he died, he told me where he’d hidden it. He said to use it for the pack.”

Theo blinked. This was insane. For decades the pack had barely been holding on, and all that time his father had money? Money that belonged to all of them?

Knox went on. “I made plans to buy the land we’re living on. But there wasn’t enough, so I was working on negotiations with the Highlanders.”

Theo rolled his eyes. “I heard that was going really well.”

“It’s time to stop living in the past,” Knox snapped. “It doesn’t do us any damn good to stay separate like this. They’re wolves; we’re wolves. We need to work together.” He huffed a bitter laugh. “I thought I was making progress. At least until our brother decided to go on his own little killing spree.”

“They came after Ruby.”

“Yeah, well, it didn’t exactly help people’s attitudes.”
