She’s right about that part.

What I don’t know is how to explain it that someone who’s in a mental break down and acting unstable.

My phone starts vibrating again.

“I gotta answer this,” I mutter to Blaire.

She gives me a sideways look that says she knows exactly who I’ve been texting all game and she’s pissed it’s effecting my ability to be present for our son.

I step away from the fence and answer. “Ronnie.”

“Do you even care?” she sobs. “Because it doesn’t feel like you care.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose.

“Ronnie, I’m listening,” I say, trying to keep my voice even.

“No, you’re not. You’re distracted.”

“I’m at Theo’s game.”

“You’re always with Theo!”

“He’s my son,” I hiss, dropping my voice. “Of course I’m with him.”

“You need to learn to balance me and him!” she cries. “That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you. If you would just consider letting me be around more—”

“No. I’m not bringing you around him,” I say, failing to stay calm. “Especially not when you’re acting so fucking—” I cut myself off.

“Acting what?” she demands. “Say it, Simon.”

I stare across the field at Theo, who’s currently digging at the dirt with his cleat while Coach tries to get his attention.

“I can’t do this right now, Veronica,” I say finally. “I’m with my son.”

“Then I’ll come over tonight.”

“No. It’s my night with him.”

“You can’t just keep brushing me off.” Her voice rises immediately. “You called your fucking ex while you were out with me. We need to talk about this.”

I grit my teeth and turn away from the field so Blaire doesn’t see my face. “Not tonight.”

“Why? Because everything revolves around Theo? Because apparently Blaire gets to call whenever she wants and I—”

The crowd suddenly erupts.

I snap my head up just in time to see Theo standing on home plate, both arms thrown in the air.

Absolutely beaming.

I missed my kid making it home because I was standing twenty feet away arguing on the phone.

“The answer is no!” The words come out sharp enough that even Veronica goes quiet.

“Simon—”

“I will text you when I am not with my kid. Don't fucking do this again.”
