Right Where I Left You

“That's what I want.” I sink a little farther into the water. “I feel like he’s not processing all this change very well.”

“What did Simon think?”

“He immediately agreed.”

“Of course he did.”

That makes me smile.

“When he walked in, Theo saw him and immediately started screaming for Daddy. Simon told him if Mommy put him in time-out, he was staying in time-out.”

“Hot.”

I laugh. “Yeah, apparently unified parenting is sexy. Now I'm sitting in bubbles while Simon cleans up forty blocks with our emotionally unstable preschooler.”

“So what's actually wrong?”

Jamie knows me too well.

“The DNA test is after Christmas.”

“She finally agreed?”

“Apparently.”

“That's good. When?”

“I don't know the exact day yet. Simon said right after Christmas.”

My stomach turns. I've spent so much time wanting an answer. Begging the universe for an answer. I didn't think much about what happens once we actually get one.

“I'm scared.”

Jamie's voice softens. “Of which answer?”

I laugh once. “Both? If it's not his… I’m not so naive to think Veronica won’t find someway to still make things difficult.”

“And if it is his?” Jamie asks.

“If it is his, then we have another kid.” I feel numb saying it.

“Simon has another kid. You have Theo and a whore for a future husband.”

I groan. “Don't.”

“What?”

I sink deeper into the bath. “He didn’t cheat. You’re making it sound like he did.”

“Okay. Fine. Sorry.” she says. “Have you thought about what that would look like?”

“Constantly. I can't picture myself not helping. If Simon has a newborn here, what am I supposed to do? Step over it?”

Jamie laughs softly. “You love babies.”

“I do. But it's not just a baby. It's her baby.” I pick at a bubble on my knee. “I don't want to resent a baby.”

“You won't.”
