Right Where I Left You

My chest tightens.

She has no fucking idea.

“I'll grab it.”

I use the walk about to my truck to check that the ring is still in my pocket.

I remember standing in the jewelry store feeling like a complete idiot when I bought it. I knew nothing about rings and there were so many options that I was certain I’d somehow fuck it up and she’d say no because it was ugly or something. If I even could work up the courage to propose to begin with. Which—turns out—I couldn’t. I needed half a decade of being a dumbass first.

I don't deserve another chance.

I'm going to ask her to give me the rest of her life even though I wasted years of it.

Chance catches up to me as I digging the carrier out of the floorboard of my backseat.

“You look like you're going to puke.”

“Fuck off.” I grunt.

“Do you have it?”

I glare at him.

“Can I see it?”

“No.” I give up searching for the carrier and slam the truck door harder than necessary. I'll just carry him if he gets tired.

“Why?”

“Because we're in a parking lot on the side of a fucking mountain, and with my luck you'll drop it down a storm drain.”

“I want to make sure you brought the right one.”

“How many engagement rings do you think I own?”

He shrugs. “You had five years. Maybe you started collecting.”

“Fuck you.”

He grins. “You nervous?”

“I've considered faking a medical emergency.”

Chance laughs. “You bought the ring years ago. Why are you still nervous?”

“Buying shit is easy. Doing shit isn’t.”

I look across the parking lot.

Blaire is crouched in front of Theo, fixing the tongue of one of his boots. He's talking with his entire body, hands flying around while she nods along like whatever he's telling her is the most important information she's ever received.

She's always been like that with him.

She looks up, catches me watching, and smiles.

“What if she says no?” I finally voice my biggest concern.

Chance looks at me like I just asked what if the sun doesn't come up tomorrow. “She won't.”
