Playing With Fire

I’m wearing an oversized North Pines T-shirt and my boyshorts.

Bishop’s gaze dips. Just once. Quick enough that I think maybe I imagined it, but long enough to know I didn’t imagine the way his jaw tightened before his eyes snapped back to mine.

A wicked little thrill settles low in my belly.

Not again...

I grab the hem of my shirt and tug it down another inch. “You’re not supposed to be here.”

One brow lifts. “Hmm.” He brings a hand to his chin and rubs the scruff. “That’s funny because I’m pretty sure I live here.”

He’s not wrong.

“You said Monday.”

“That was the plan.” He reaches up and loosens his tie another inch. “We flew back tonight.”

“You could’ve warned me.”

“That I was coming home to my own apartment?”

Well… when he puts it that way.

Darcy stretches across Bishop’s pillow, extending all four paws like he hasn’t a care in the world.

Bishop looks at him, then at me, then back at my cat.

“Why is he in my bed?”

“I don’t know. Maybe he likes you.”

He scoffs.

I smirk.

“Well, the feeling is not mutual.” He waves a hand toward his pillow. “I don’t want him in my bed. On my pillow. Hell, I don’t even want him in my apartment.”

My bad. Oops.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t tell you. I knew you would say no to him coming.”

Bishop doesn’t even miss a beat. “Damn right I would have.”

Tell me how you really feel. Geez.

“He’s my baby.” I can’t help the whine that slips into my voice, and I feel like a teenager all over again, begging him and Declan to let me tag along.

“Baby?” He snorts. “He’s a demon, Laney.” He pulls his tie over his head and tosses it over on the chair.

“We’re a package deal.” I lift my chin.

A hint of amusement flickers across Bishop’s face. “Noted.”

Darcy chooses that moment to reach one paw toward the nightstand.

“Darcy, don’t–”

A sharp clatter breaks the moment.
