I can still remember standing outside that room, feeling like the biggest idiot in the world. Because for one night, I'd let myself believe he might see me differently.
A soft knock sounds behind me.
“Becks?”
I turn.
Bishop stands in the doorway.
He's changed into jeans and a white T-shirt, his hair still a little damp.
“Hey.”
His eyes drop to the photograph in my hand.
Then he looks back at me. “What's that?”
I hesitate before holding it up. “North Pines.”
He steps closer. A small smile touches his mouth. “Damn. Look at that hair.”
I laugh.
“Yours or mine?”
“Mine. What the hell was I thinking?”
“You thought you were very cool.”
“I was very cool.”
“You had a crooked bow tie.”
“Still got you to dance with me.”
I look down at the picture. “Yeah. You did.”
He takes it gently from my hand.
For a moment, he studies it without speaking. Then he looks at me. Becks, I remember that night.”
Something in his voice makes me look up. Do you?”
“Yeah.” He steps closer.
“I remember more than you think.”
My pulse quickens. “What does that mean?”
He opens his mouth. But before he can answer—
“Bish!”
Declan's voice carries from the hallway.
Bishop closes his eyes. “Jesus Christ.”
I almost laugh.
