I close my eyes. Here we go.

“Pretty sure she would've found something to do without me,” Bishop says.

The other woman laughs. “Oh, I'm sure. It's just a little unexpected, that's all.”

“What is?”

“You bringing someone like her.”

Silence. Not the comfortable kind.

“The fuck does that mean?”

My eyes open.

The blonde gives a nervous little laugh.

“Don't be like that. You know what I mean.”

“No. I don't. Why don’t you enlighten me?” His voice is quieter now.

Which, somehow, makes it worse.

“Well, she's just not exactly your usual type.”

Another pause.

“And you are?” He spits out.

“Hayes, don't be ridiculous. We were only saying—”

“I heard what you said. And I heard what you didn't say even louder.”

The corridor goes still.

I move closer to the corner. Not enough to be seen. Just enough to catch a glimpse of him.

He stands with one hand in his pocket; shoulders squared toward the women. No easy grin. No charming captain routine. Just a very pissed Hayes Bishop.

“Delaney's a fucking goddess,” he says. “She's smart, talented, funny as hell, and probably the most interesting person in that room.”

My throat tightens.

The blonde shifts uncomfortably. “I wasn't insulting her.”

“Then why do you keep talking about her like she's not good enough to be here?”

Neither woman answers.

He takes a step back. “Look, if you're trying to get my attention by putting her down, you picked the wrong fucking guy.”

“Hayes—”

“Enjoy the rest of your night.” He turns away. “And stay the fuck away from my date spewing your bullshit, or I’ll have you thrown out.”

And I decide to leave my hiding spot and step out from around the corner because I can’t bear to not be touching him any longer.

His expression changes the second he sees me. “Becks.”
