Lucy looks up at me as dazed as I feel. I need a minute to catch my breath from the heated contact and to adjust myself.
“Bags” is all I can manage with her eyes locked on mine, swimming with emotion.
“Yeah.” She pops the back of the SUV open with her remote.
Another minute more of pretending and I would have more than crossed a line—I would have obliterated it. I grab my bags and look back to where she stands at the door watching me until our eyes meet, and she turns her back to me and resumes unlocking the smaller glass door next to the large decorated one.
Standing over her shoulder, I peer into the glass of her shop door and see large, framed prints of wedding vision boards. A chandelier dangles from the ceiling; everything looks so delicate and… white. The papered walls have a pearly design, and the low sofa is a creamy shade with fluffy white pillows scattered on it. In front of it sits an ornate low table, covered in magazines and a silver vase overflowing with pink flowers… no blush.
“We can see the shop later.”
I shift my gaze to the door to the left, and my gaze meets hers in the reflection. “From what I can see, it’s perfect. Understated elegance. And I’m hoping to see a few issues of Blissful Bride on that table,” I tease her.
“I think we both know you’ll find plenty of old copies around the shop and my apartment. But if you’re looking for good stuff—the vintage issues—I’ll have to take you to my old room at the farm.”
“Have you ever brought a boy there before?” The question pops out, and it’s too late to take it back, so I wait for her answer.
“I don’t kiss and tell.” She looks over her shoulder and winks at me.
I can picture her as a teen lounging on her bed, bare feet up in the air, listening to her iPod, and scouring the pages of bridal magazines, dreaming of her wedding day.
A dream day that I’m taking away from her with our little arrangement.
She opens the door and reaches for her tote.
“I’ve got it.” I grab the beige bag and follow her in.
“This is the residential entrance, separate from the shop. That reminds me, I need to have you a key made.”
“Speaking of keys, I think you forgot to lock your car,” I warn her.
“It’ll be okay. Most people don’t lock their doors here. I lock up this place for insurance purposes.”
The thought seems absurd to me!
“What’s in this bag?” I ask with a playful grin, but it seriously feels like it’s full of bricks.
“This and that,” she singsongs with a laugh. “And a little bit of everything.”
“You got the everything part right, Sunny.”
Condoms?
My mind drifts back to that night for the millionth time in a week. Seeing as how we went through that whole box that night. Nah.
Not helping.
Neither is the fact that her ass is right in front of my face or the way her pretty blue dress lifts as she climbs the stairs. I’m not a total dick, so I try to focus on her feet.
But fuck, even those are sexy on her strappy little sandals with her pink toes.
As we finally reach the top of the stairs, we find ourselves on a small landing. Giving my arms a rest, I sit the bags down while Lucy unlocks the door.
“Welcome home,” she says with a smile as she turns the key and pushes open the heavy wooden door.
The words catch me off guard.
Home.
