Instead, I shift over him, getting an even better angle. It’s tough with the layers of his pants and my jeans between us, but I’m up for the challenge.

“Fuck, Townie.” His grunt is hoarse, a little desperate.

I don’t let up. Not until Jameson goes tight under me, groaning into my neck.

When he pulls back, his expression is horrified.

“Did you just…?” I swipe a finger across my lips.

He nods slowly, shifting on the bike.

My grin is unstoppable.

“Oh, you liked that, did you?” he tosses, every syllable laced with self-deprecation. “You’re pretty fucking pleased with yourself.”

“Delighted,” I agree as I tug my shirt back in place. We might have turned the side of the road into dry humping paradise, but we’re basically still in public.

As much fun as I’m having, I can’t kick the realization that I’ve never wanted someone like I want him. It’s as if being with him changes me. Am I a different person when I’m with him, or do I just look different when I see myself through his eyes?

We’re going down a path leading somewhere unknown, but I can’t hear the warning bells. Not when he’s right here. We’re right here.

“Jameson.”

His hands settle on my hips as he meets my gaze. “Yeah.”

“Can I trust you?” I ask tentatively.

“I’d never put you at risk.”

“Again.”

He frowns, gaze searching mine.

“You’d never put me at risk again. Because there was that time you drove into me, which was a massively dickish meet-cute, by the way.”

Jameson’s eyes flicker. “Right.”

A semitruck roars past. Its horn blares, its tires sending up a spray of water from the shoulder.

“That was absolutely the last time,” he says, deadpan. I laugh.

My phone rings, and I briefly fantasize about throwing it into the river.

“Damn it. I promised Megan I’d study with her,” I say under my breath.

His sigh is pure annoyance at the universe. “Guess I should get you back. We could stop and get you fresh clothes.”

“Deal.”

“I could come inside…” His thumbs press into my hip bones under my wet shirt, his mouth dropping to my collarbone.

I swear my toes curl. “You might not fail out of the academy if you have a bad test. But I definitely will.”

I take a seat behind him again, feeling the thud of his heartbeat as we race back through the rain and wishing we had more time.
