Crash Course

Hollers from the other guys go up as I let him go. Even Theo’s brows are at his hairline.

“That feel good?” my brother asks, leaning over.

“Physically, no. Emotionally, yes.” I take my seat and shake out my hand.

“You could’ve told me you’re in love with her.” Theo’s low words have my head snapping toward him.

“I didn’t say that.”

My brother glances toward Knox, who’s rubbing his neck and cursing. “Yeah, you did.”

His words have spots appearing behind my eyes, and it’s not from the pain in my sternum.

Since the crash, Shay and I have been inseparable. There are no guarantees in life, but Miami was a stark reminder of what really matters.

Giving up that lie about the first day of school was a weight off my chest.

For weeks now, I catch myself thinking about her smile. The way she cares about her friends, and her father. How she looks when she’s concentrating on a problem, as if every obstacle in this world is just a puzzle she’s going to enjoy wrestling with.

Last weekend in Vegas we spent more time in bed than out of it. Talking. Touching. Falling asleep with her curled into my side and waking up with her hair in my face.

We flew home like nothing fundamental had shifted.

Except everything had.

It made me realize I could be more than the heir my father wants and the brother Theo deserves.

Fuck, maybe I am in love with her.

Every time she looks at me, I’m more reckless. Every time I touch her, it’s harder to imagine being without her.

It’s terrifying.

I don’t know how to make it stop.

I’m not sure I want to.

My phone buzzes. Unknown number. I don’t normally answer, but I need a second to get my head on straight.

“Hello.”

“Jameson, it’s Dekker. My lawyers advised against this, but I didn’t know where else to turn.”

The voice of ARI’s second driver has me out of the booth and heading for the hallway, the others protesting.

“Keep talking.”

“When my contract got canceled, I knew something was wrong. Hell, I knew before then. ARI tried to say I didn’t perform, but the truth is the setup wasn’t the same across the cars.”

“That’s not possible.”

There’s no way the team would do that. My father wouldn’t tank one of his cars. A season is worth too much.

“It’s not only possible, it happened. That’s why the federation launched their investigation. But they’re having trouble finding the evidence.”

Because there is none. I bite my tongue.

“Why trust me?”
