I paused and waited for the inevitable rebuttal, but it never came. Instead, I witnessed Hart’s jaw clench in the darkness.
I’m calling it now. We won’t make it through November without breaking the rules. Not after his bathroom confession about his fear of falling in love with me, and his obvious distaste for being kept a secret — despite that being the main reason he joined Sugar Rush: a discreet arrangement to last through the season.
“Hart?”
“I got it,” he said, trying to mask his disgruntled tone. “Anything else?”
“You can’t follow me on social media.”
“But you follow me on IG,” he said, as if pointing out my hypocrisy.
“I do, but no one would think twice about me following you because of who you are, but the psycho sleuths on the internet would heavily scrutinize why we were following each other. Next thing you know, I’m getting death threats in my DMs.”
“Fair enough. Anything else?”
“I don’t like red.”
“I’ll write that down,” he said through clenched teeth as I eased past a sneaky red light. “Is that all?”
“That’s all I can think of at the moment.”
“Good. I have a condition of my own.”
“Let’s hear it.”
“You have to go out with me at least once a week.”
My eyes briefly slanted towards him before returning to the road.
This is sounding more and more like dating but without a title.
“Are you asking me to go on a date with you once a week on top of being available to you after every home game and flying out to away games?”
“Yes.”
I smiled in the darkness.
“You don’t think that’s a bit excessive?”
“Not at all,” he answered swiftly.
“And are you planning these dates?”
“We can switch. How does Thursday sound to you?”
“Thursday is a school day. I might be a little beat afterward. How about Wednesdays?”
“That works. We’ll shuffle some things around if I have a game.”
“Are you planning the first date?”
“I will.”
“I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with,” I replied, settling my hand on his thigh. He grabbed my wrist and placed my hand at 2 o’clock.
“Ten and two, Sugar. Ten and two.”
“Oh, my God. You’re so dramatic,” I drawled, pulling into the parking lot of my apartment complex.
