He catches my other wrist when I try to hit him again.

Rylan holds on while I fight against him.

“She trusted me!”

“I know.”

“I was supposed to protect her!”

“I know.”

“What good is all this fucking power if I couldn't save my own mate?”

My knees buckle. Rylan goes down with me.

I shove him away and slam my fist into the ground.

“I failed her twice.”

Failed mate.

My wolf's grief crashes through me.

“I know.”

Could not protect mate.

“I fucking know!”

My Alpha aura explodes from me. Power tears through the clearing, shaking branches and sending leaves spiraling around us.

“I couldn't save her the first time.”

Blood. Death. Another life. Another chance.

“I was supposed to do better this time.”

Rylan wipes blood from his mouth. “You did.”

“She's fucking dead, Rylan!”

My voice tears through the forest.

“She's dead!”

“I know.”

“Then don't fucking tell me I did better!”

I try to stand again. My legs barely get beneath me before they give out.

Rylan catches me.

This time I don't have enough strength left to throw him off.
