His voice breaks on the last word.

“Then control the flow. Give her what she needs and keep enough to run.”

Arlene makes a weak sound, and another surge of Alpha energy rolls from Darian. His step falters.

I move closer in case he falls. “Darian.”

“I fucking know!”

I don't answer. I understand.

If Selena were dying in my arms, there isn't a force in this world that could convince me not to give her everything I have.

So I stay beside him.

And we run.

Her voice is weaker now, and I'm terrified to answer.

"You can tell me when we get home."

Something about the way she says it makes my stomach drop.
