“Yes, right after the storm hit. I think Grant went after Knox. I don’t know why he was out in it but I think he was.”
“I’ll go to Knox’s cabin next.”
“Will you let me know if they’re okay?”
“Of course. Back in a jiffy. Try not to worry.”
As if that were possible.
Mercifully, I didn’t have to wait long. Grant came rushing toward my cabin not long after Finley went to check Knox’s cabin. Seeing him alive and safe made me start to cry. I opened the door of my cabin and ushered him in, then threw my arms around him. “I was so worried.”
“I’m sorry. I tried to text you.”
“But they didn’t go through. I know. I tried to text you too.”
He held me tight against him. “I’m okay.”
“What were you doing out there?” I asked.
“I was watching from the window and I saw Knox out there, stumbling around. I knew he was lost and that he didn’t have much time. So I went after him.”
“Is he all right? His fingers?”
“Yes, he’s good. His hands are fine.”
“Why was he out there?” I asked.
“He went to Madeleine’s cabin and knocked on the door but she didn’t answer. His intention was to stay with her.”
“But she didn’t answer?”
“That’s right. She might not have heard him knocking. The storm was so loud.”
“He took it as rejection, though?”
“That’s right. He’s in love with her. And now he’s miserable.”
“I told myself a thousand times you were okay, but I was really scared.” I started to cry again.
He stroked my hair and continued to hold me close. “It’s okay now.”
“Did you talk to Jack last night?” I asked.
He let me go and went to sit on the edge of the bed. “I was going to but he left before I could get to him.”
All the air went out of me. I’d been so hopeful, only to be disappointed again.
“I’ll talk to him today if I can get him alone for a moment.”
“You promised before the wedding.”
“I know I did. But I didn’t anticipate the storm.”
I sat down next to him on the bed and took his big, rough hand into mine. “I’m glad you’re safe. That’s what matters the most.”
“I’m glad to hear you say that. I thought you’d be angry with me.”
“I might have been but the storm distracted me.” I smiled up at him, cupping his cheek in my hand. “But I have to know. Are you in this or not?”
