Once Ivy had recorded their zero, Beck took the marker.

He started by drawing a circle.

“Donut,” Blake said.

He added leaves.

“Salad,” Blake said.

A bow appeared at the bottom.

“A fancy donut?” Blake asked.

The bell rang.

“It’s a wreath,” Beck said.

“Oh, yes, I see now,” Blake said. “I should’ve gotten that one.”

“No big deal,” Beck said, winking at her before returning to the sofa.

Jack went next. His gingerbread man looked like the chalk outline from a Christmas murder scene, but Ivy guessed it in under ten seconds.

Jack tossed down the marker and scooped her out of her chair, cradling her against his chest.

“That’s my girl.”

“You’re so clever,” Ivy said.

“You’re clever,” Jack said.

They started kissing as if they’d forgotten we were there.

“Gross,” Rhett said.

Then it was Grant’s turn.

We all knew what he could do after seeing him draw at the talent show. Even so, the ease with which he handled the fat black marker was impressive. He drew a tall hat, a square jaw, a row of teeth and three round buttons.

“The Nutcracker,” I said.

Grant lowered the marker. “Boom.”

“That was seven seconds,” Ivy said. “I call cheating.”

“How could we cheat?” Grant asked.

“We’re not cheaters,” I said, pretending to be offended. But we were. Sort of. “It was so obviously the Nutcracker.”

Grant smiled as he returned to his seat beside me. “You’re welcome,” he said to me.

I shoved my elbow into his side.

The second round began with Holly drawing and Rhett guessing. She drew two leaves and a cluster of berries.

“Holly,” Rhett said immediately. “The prettiest of all plants.”

Holly rolled her eyes, then added two stick figures underneath.
