What?

“Easy near me?” I whispered.

“Beauchamp, believe me, you are seriously easy to be near.”

I didn’t know what to say, so I started stuffing the clothes in the chest and felt the telltale blush on my skin. “Good,” I said, glad that he couldn’t see my face.

He was back in the spare room when I collected more clothes, startling me once more.

“Wish I could help,” he said.

“You are by keeping me company.”

He was examining the contents of my dressing table when I came back to my room.

“Still showing off,” I whispered.

“No shit,” he said and grinned.

I scowled at him in mock horror. “Well, it’s frustrating for this mere mortal. I wish I could move as quickly as you do.”

“Be careful what you wish for,” he said, his tone more serious.

I packed more clothes into the chest and stood when I was finished, ready to collect more.

Suddenly, his head swung toward the bedroom door and his expression changed to one of alarm.

“Stay here!” he commanded.

What? He couldn’t tell me what to do! “Why?”

“Just do as you’re told.”

“Why?” I put more moral indignation into my question this time and started toward him.

He vanished.

“Tristan?” I called.

He was back. “Stay here,” he growled.

“Why?”

This was so confusing. I made my way to the bedroom door. Abruptly, I was catapulted, sprawling flat on my back onto the bed by a force that felt like an explosive gust of air.

“I said stay here. You’re not going anywhere. It’s not safe,” Tristan hissed.

“You can’t keep me here.” Winded, I struggled to sit up.

“I can fucking try,” he answered, his tone menacing as the same force pushed me down again.

“Why are you doing this?” I gazed at him in wide-eyed horror.

“There’s an intruder. Do the fuck as you’re told and stay here,” he ordered, angry now, and he vanished.
