“She’s a minor,” Dylan said.
“Then I need a parent’s consent.” Officer Tall looked confused.
Bam! I felt like she’d kicked me in the chest.
“I’m her guardian,” Dylan said, curt and businesslike. He shot me a quick anxious glance, and I knew he was trying to gauge my reaction.
Another meltdown?
I took a deep, steadying breath.
Get it together, Emily.
I exhaled. The white noise was quiet. Numb was back. I was okay. I could do this.
Moments later, Dylan had signed the form and my prints were done.
“Well, that’s me finished. Thank you for your time,” Office Tall said, beaming at Doctor Dyl.
“I’ll see you out.” Dylan led the way out of the kitchen.
I glanced at Lulu.
“See what I mean?” she muttered, referring to her cryptic comments at the cricket match.
I nodded with sympathy and tried to reassure her. “It’s not like he’s encouraging her or anything.”
“You’re right.” Lulu pouted. “Anyway, have you decided if you are going to this party?”
“I think I will, but just for a short time.”
“Right, what are you going to wear?”
Chapter XVII Mandy
Lulu had me ready by 7:29, hair loose, minimal makeup, wearing my cream silk skirt, the black waistcoat, and my white Adidas trainers. Lulu had given me a tiny crossbody Prada bag, which I’d only accepted after she’d placed both her hands on her hips and insisted.
It’s last season, Emily.
Lulu did not take no thank you for an answer, so I’d begrudgingly accepted it. It was cool and had enough room for lipstick and my phone.
“You look good, Emily.”
And the young woman staring back at me in the mirror was basic no more.
“Badass?” I asked.
Lulu laughed and gave me an affirmative nod.
Jack was late, and I paced the hallway waiting for him.
Perhaps he’s forgotten.
Finally, at 7:48, the doorbell rang, and when I opened the front door, Jack had arrived with a couple of friends, both his age or thereabouts.
“Hey, Emily. Nice!” he said, and I think he was referring to my outfit.
“Thanks.” I gave him a shy smile. “Come in.”
