The Annoyingly Attractive Neighbor

“We’re going anyway.”
Claire smiled. She was pretty sure Noah would take her to Hawaii anyway.
The next morning, Claire had barely set down her coffee before Avery grabbed her left hand. “What is this?”
Claire glanced at her ring and tried to keep her expression neutral. “A ring.”
“Do not play games with me before I’ve finished my coffee. It’s not even nine in the morning.”
Claire smiled. “Noah proposed.”
Avery screamed loudly enough for half the office to turn around.
“Could you not announce it to the entire floor?”
“No, absolutely not.” Avery pulled her into a hug. “You’re engaged!”
Claire laughed as she hugged her back. “I know.”
Avery released her and immediately took her hand again. “Let me see. Oh, he did so good.”
“He had help.”
“Of course he did. Men cannot be trusted with jewelry unsupervised.”
“Sit down and tell me everything,” Avery ordered.
“I have work.”
“You got engaged last night. Work has been canceled.”
“I don’t think Victoria knows that.”
“She’ll understand.”
Avery dragged her chair closer to Claire’s desk. “Start at the beginning. Where did he take you?”
Claire hesitated. “We were in his kitchen—”
Avery immediately cut her off. “He proposed in the kitchen?”
“It was romantic.”
She narrowed her eyes like she didn’t believe her. “Continue.”
“I was baking cookies, and he was cooking spaghetti—”
“He proposed by spaghetti?” She looked appalled.
“Let me talk.”
“Was there at least candlelight?”
“There was spaghetti.”
“Claire.”
“And garlic bread.”
