“Alexis!” Hands clamp my arms. I struggle in their grip. “Alexis!”

I can’t breathe. I can’t fucking breathe. “Carson!” Killian is hovering above me. I’m lying on the floor, the blood stain a few inches from my head.

No, no. Not her.

“Come on, man, breathe. Breathe.”

Alexis, I need Alexis.

“Cars? What’s going on?” Alexis, I can recognize her voice from afar.

My eyes open as she nears me. Her face is ashen, her hands trembling, but there is no blood. She’s not bleeding.

“Alexis.” Her name is a breathy sigh. She’s here. Alive. My head thumps against the floor. All the adrenaline in my body wears off.

She’s here.

She kneels near me, cupping my face in her shaking hands, her lips touching mine in a soft caress. “Am I not dreaming?”

She shakes her head. Her bottom lip trembles. Tears pool in her eyes. “No, baby, you’re not dreaming. I’m here. I’m right here.” She kisses my cheek, lips, neck everywhere she can touch. She’s not bleeding. She drops down on my lap, pulling me towards her. My ear hovers over her chest. The soft thrumming of her heartbeat soothes my mind.

She’s here.

“I’m sorry, I should have called you. I’m so sorry, baby. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay,” I whisper. It’s all okay. She’s alive here in my arms. Nothing else matters.

“You scared me,” I say. Alexis squeezes our interlocked hands, her head leaning against my shoulder as we sit on the ground in my driveway. She’s here. She’s really here. “I watched the security feed, and I saw him pointing a gun at you, and I swear, Alexis, I have never been so scared as I was then.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” She lifts my chin, smiling sadly, then kisses me on the lips.

“How did you do it?” The blood on the floor belonged to the armed man, the same man who killed Micah. Apparently, Alexis had managed to overpower him and knock him unconscious. She surprises me every day. I have never seen someone as resilient as her. She isn’t even scared. I’m the one who was petrified while she was acting like it was just another Tuesday.

She shrugs. “He was stupid. I told him something ridiculous, and he believed it.”

“How were you not scared?” I ask softly. She cuddles closer to me. The pavement underneath me gets more uncomfortable with the minute. Alexis her house is considered a crime scene at the moment, but they told us it wouldn’t take long before we’re allowed to be inside again.

“It wasn’t the first time someone pulled a gun on me.”

“What? Other people pulled a gun on you?”

“Yeah, they didn’t shoot me, but they liked threatening me with it.”

“Jesus Christ.”

I have never wanted to commit murder before, but the assholes from Alexis’s past make me almost consider it.

“He was my father.”

Her father? Who?

“Mr Monroe. He was my biological father.”

Holy shit.

“What do you mean, baby? Did he say that?”

She nods dejectedly. “Yeah, he killed my biological mother and Kane too.”
