The four of us take our seats, with a few of our guards standing nearby. Their eyes scan the room for any imminent attack, and when they’re satisfied, they give Vin a simple nod.
The room is bustling with people. All the elite members of New York have come here to kiss ass and be seen by those whose opinions they think matter. Once everyone is seated, the first course of the evening is served.
“Where the hell is he?” I murmur, my index finger tapping repeatedly on the white linen tablecloth as the bottle of whiskey is presented to Vin.
“Relax.” Vin pours the dark liquid into four glasses and then slides one to each of us. He takes a sip, his eyes drifting over the rim to a woman nearby who slips her silverware into her purse. “He’s not going to miss his own birthday party. He’s probably just waiting for the right moment to make his grand entrance.”
“I hate parties,” Leo complains, reaching for the glass of whiskey in front of him.
Vin rolls his eyes, setting his drink down. “We all know you’d rather be home with your wife, but you can see her once we’re done here.”
He scowls, throwing back his drink.
“I don’t know.” I glance around the room. “Something doesn’t feel right.” I meet Vin’s gaze. “Wouldn’t you be out welcoming guests at your own party?”
“Of course.” He tugs at his collar. “But Garrett has no class, and he sure as fuck isn’t me.”
Mauro pours himself another glass, swirling the liquid around before bringing it to his lips.
I reach inside my pocket and pull out my phone to text Charlotte.
Alex
Are you home?
Thankfully, she responds within seconds.
Charlotte
On our way home from the playground. Everything okay?
Alex
Yes, just let me know as soon as you get home.
Charlotte
I will. Stay safe.
I swipe across the screen and text Eli.
Alex
Everything secure?
I place my phone on the table, and only a few seconds pass before it buzzes.
Eli
Everything is good here. Don’t worry, no one is getting through these gates tonight. We’re preparing for the lockdown now.
Alex
Charlotte and Clara are on their way home from the playground. Do not lock down until they’re back.
Eli
You got it.
