My brow furrows. “Why?”
He doesn’t answer, but the way he’s looking at me makes my stomach flutter.
Oh.
I think about the white wolf outside my window. The way Hewit’s eyes change when I get too close. How he’s told me the wolf wants me, even when he’s doing his damnedest to keep his distance.
“Me?” I ask softly.
His thumb brushes across my knuckles. “Yeah.”
My heart gives a ridiculous little leap. Hewit has spent years keeping his wolf buried, and somehow, since I arrived, he’s been finding it harder and harder to do.
I smile before I can help myself. “Well, I suppose I should apologize for ruining your disappearing act.”
“Don’t.”
His answer is immediate, and the heat in his eyes makes me want to lean across the table and kiss him.
I take a deep breath, resisting the urge, knowing now is not the right time. “So, what else did you and Reid talk about?”
Hewit’s expression softens. “He found his mate, and he’s married. His wife’s name is Scarlett. They live in Fable Forest. They’re happy.” He pauses, swallowing. “She’s pregnant. He wanted to tell me. About all of it.” His gaze drops to the table. “All the things you tell your brother when you still have one.”
The lump in my throat grows. “You still have one. You sat with him today. You talked. That sounds like a brother to me.”
Hewit’s fingers tighten around mine. “There’s something else.”
I tense. “What?”
“Scarlett nearly died when Reid met her.”
I sit straighter. “What happened?”
“She was attacked. Badly enough that Reid thought he was going to lose her.” Hewit’s gaze drops to my throat, and I suddenly know this part is about us. “He bit her to save her.”
“And it worked?”
He shrugs. “She lived.”
The way he says it tells me there’s more. “But?”
“She changed.”
I understand before he explains. “Into a wolf.”
“Yes.”
The memory of yesterday comes back with startling clarity. Hewit’s mouth moving from mine to my jaw, then lower. The way every muscle in his body locked when he reached my throat and how quickly he pushed away.
I touch the side of my neck without meaning to. “That’s what happened yesterday. You wanted to bite me.”
Hewit’s eyes follow my hand. “The wolf did.”
There’s the separation again.
“So Scarlett changed because Reid bit her?”
“Karloff doesn’t think it’s that simple.” Hewit rubs his thumb over my knuckles. “Scarlett already had magic. Old magic. Reid’s bite may have awakened something that was already there.”
