Jack stood there, watching Maggie until she was gone before turning to me.
“Smooth, man. Real smooth.”
“I haven’t the faintest idea what you’re talking about.”
He produced another meat stick from his pocket, biting the corner with a suspiciously long canine, peeled it back, and took a bite before answering.
“We might all be different species, man. But some languages are universal. I’m talking body language here.”
“Evidently.”
“There was some interesting body language going on.”
“If you say so. We have a show,” I reminded him, waving toward the booth.
“Fine. Keep your secrets.”
I glanced out of the studio, where I could hear Maggie’s laughter drifting down the hallway.

The vending machine didn’t care what I wanted. I was getting a fortune, and it didn’t care how I felt about it.
Not yet. But soon.
“You deny me my chips and give me a vague fortune?” I grumbled, whacking the side of the machine. I only managed to make my hand hurt.
“You look like a woman in desperate need of a fridge cig,” Tess said, handing me a diet soda.
“I was supposed to be quitting these.” I popped the tab.
“Yeah, and I’m supposed to stop picking on the Alpha Mindset guys. But guess who made Declan’s lower lip tremble?”
“You’re so mean.”
“He told me that he doesn’t think women should be allowed to vote because our brains are smaller than theirs.”
It was technically true. But women’s brains had higher ratios of gray and white matter, making our brains more efficient.
So, yeah, Declan could get bent.
“What’d you say?”
“Something about the size of another part of his anatomy from all the steroids he’s been doing..”
“Tess!”
