“I’m sorry,” Daisy squeaks. “This is just really big, and I needed to tell you guys.”
I sigh, deciding to let it go as best as I can and nod. “Okay. Tell us your news.”
She flashes the biggest smile I’ve ever seen, a blush staining her cheeks as she slides her hand across the table and says, “Tucker proposed.”
Emma shrieks so loudly that everyone else in the diner turns to look at us, and I gasp, getting an eyeful of the gorgeous rose gold ring that matches her personality perfectly. I grab her hand and pull it toward me, admiring the way the diamonds sparkle as my heart races with excitement about having a ring of my own someday.
“Oh my God, you’re going to be my sister,” Emma says, tears falling down her cheeks, and they both giggle, leaning in for a hug. I notice that where I would usually feel jealousy, I only feel happiness for them and hope for my future, and that alone makes me smile.
“Oh, there’s more,” Daisy says, and Emma covers her mouth with her hand.
“Are you pregnant? Holy crap, you’re pregnant!” Emma exclaims, practically bouncing in her seat, and Daisy laughs as I eye her warily.
“You really need to talk to your doctor about getting your hormones under control. Good God, woman,” I tease her, and she shoots me a look.
“I’m not pregnant,” Daisy cuts in, and Emma’s face falls, which of course, makes me laugh again.
“So what is it then?” I ask, needing to get this show on the road so I can go confess my love to Trey.
“He built me a house.”
I choke on the sip of coffee I just took, spraying it all over the table as I stare up at her with wide eyes. “I’m sorry, I swear I just heard you say that he built you a goddamn house.”
She nods. “My dream house.”
“What?” Emma asks, looking as equally confused as I am.
“You know that project we had in middle school to design our dream houses?”
“Um… vaguely.”
“Well, he found my drawing, and he built it for me. For us.”
Emma clasps her hand over her heart and sighs. “Oh my God, my brother is so romantic. I mean, gross ‘cause he’s my brother but still.”
“Man, that guy doesn’t half ass anything,” I say, and Daisy shakes her head.
“No, he does not.”
The look on her face gives away her dirty thoughts, and I scrunch my face up in disgust. “Um… TMI.”
“Seriously, what is your deal today?” Emma snaps, whipping around to focus all her attention on me. Did I mention she’s scary when she’s pregnant? I sigh and take another sip of coffee, hoping it will soothe me a little.
“I’m sorry, really. It’s just been a crazy morning, and it’s only seven thirty.”
“What happened?” Daisy asks.
“Kyle,” I growl, thinking about the flowers sitting on my table at home. I should have thrown them out on my way out but I was too focused on getting to Daisy.
“Is he still bothering you?” Emma asks, her voice wary.
“Sweetie, I promise it’s not like that. You can stop worrying. He just sent me flowers this morning.”
“Has he contacted you since we were with you last?”
“No,” I exclaim, my frustration boiling over. “I thought he was out of the picture, and then they show up this morning.”
“What did the card say?”
