“It’s Kyle,” I sigh, and they both look at each other with scowls before turning back to me.
“What about Kyle? You guys broke up months ago, right?” Daisy asks, and I nod. That’s really where I wish this story ended. My relationship with Trey wouldn’t be hanging in the balance if it was.
“Yeah, we did but he came into town over the weekend and wanted to grab dinner as friends but when we got to the restaurant, he started talking about how the time apart had made him realize that he’d been more focused on work than me, and he wanted to fix things.”
“What did you say?” Emma asks, leaning in, and I hold in my laughter. Emma is probably one of the least judgmental people I’ve ever met but she’s always loved gossip and drama. She can’t get enough.
“I told him, very clearly, that I don’t feel anything more than friendship for him but he brushed it off. He told me to think about it and that he wasn’t going to give up.”
Emma sucks in a breath, and I shoot her a puzzled look. Then, it hits me. “Oh no, honey, not like that. Kyle is not like Ryan, I promise you. He’s just going to be a nuisance for a little bit.”
“Are you sure?” she asks, still looking a little shaken. I hate that even after all this time, she still has moments where the fear overtakes her and she’s thrust back into old memories. Nix is so good for her but even he can’t erase everything.
“Yes. Absolutely. Em, I promise this is not going to turn into another Ryan situation.”
She chews on her lip for a moment before looking over at my phone. “Was that him that just texted you?”
I nod.
“What did he say?”
Shrugging, I grab my phone and open his message, my teeth grinding in annoyance when I see what he sent. I’m completely out of patience for this, and I have to be mean now.
“It says, ‘thinking about you, gorgeous. Miss you already’,” I growl, my voice giving away my level of annoyance.
“That doesn’t sound like he’s getting the hint,” Daisy says, and I nod.
“Yeah, not so much,” I reply as I type a message back to him.
Me:
Kyle, please stop contacting me
“What did you say?” Emma asks, and I show her the message I just sent. She barely holds in a laugh as she takes a sip of her apple juice.
“Well, I’d say that gets the point across.”
“Yeah, like a knife to the chest,” Daisy adds, and we all start giggling.
“No one ever said subtly was my strong suit,” I add, feeling a whole lot better than I did just a few minutes ago. I don’t know what I’d do without these girls. I’m so grateful to not only have them in my life but to have grown up with them. We all know each other so well that we don’t even need to speak when something is wrong with us. So, when Emma shoots me a look, I know that she didn’t believe my diversion and will be pressing me for more details later.
