I have some things to do today, then a meeting with the massage therapy school to sign up for my classes. I have a hundred and twenty-five hours to make up, and if I don’t get started now, I have a feeling I’ll never finish it.
Brock is going to help me. He’s probably the most supportive person in my life right now, aside from the other old ladies of the Iron Flame MC. People I didn’t even know a month ago have become some of the most supportive in my life, even more than the ones I’ve known for years, and while it makes me sad, it also fills me with hope.
So much freaking hope and excitement. I can’t wait for what the rest of this day will bring, and every day afterward.
CHAPTER
SIXTY-SEVEN
HOUND
Stepping out of the elevator and into the hallway, I look down to where Chassis’s room is and see Dare slipping out. As if sensing me, he lifts his head, his eyes finding mine almost instantly.
His head tips to the side at the sight of me, his footsteps faltering, but then he moves again and swiftly closes the distance between us. He stops a few feet in front of me, crossing his arms over his chest as he tips his chin down slightly, his attention focused on me.
“What the fuck is going on?” he asks in a growl.
Flicking my gaze around the hall, I clear my throat and begin to speak. There isn’t anyone around, so I can speak somewhat freely. “Did Cake talk to you at all?” I ask, making sure to keep my voice low.
“About club business?” But he doesn’t wait for my answer before he continues. “No, he hasn’t said anything. Everything we’ve discussed has been about Chassis and the baby. What the fuck is going on?” His demand comes out in a growl that only I can hear.
“Cake knows about the Russian involvement with the other clubs, and he doesn’t give a fuck. We had a whole thing in the lobby while we were waiting for the baby. I think they’re doing something, too. He said as long as everything is running smoothly and they’re getting the agreed-upon cut, he doesn’t care what else is happen—.”
“I call bullshit,” Dare growls before I can even finish my last word. “Our club has never operated like that. If anyone did anything on the side, it was a different fucking job, not working for another fucking organization.”
I continue rolling the ball, since we’re on it. “For someone who was so against working with the Russians, to the point where he would broker a deal for one of our men to secretly marry his daughter, he sure doesn’t give a fuck anymore, so I want to know what the fuck is going on.”
“Me too,” Dare growls. “Though it was a good choice to send Chassis here,” he says, a smile playing on his lips. He loves his old lady and their baby. The father of said baby will never be a question any longer. It’s Dare, and it will always be Dare.
“Hippie is trying to get information from the boys, but I’m going to see if there’s anything else I can find. Know a clubwhore back at their place. Maybe she’d tell me something.”
Dare shakes his head once, then lifts his hand to his face and begins to rub his chin. “Not the clubwhore,” he murmurs. “Gauge’s woman, Heleni. If anyone knows anything, it would be her, and I’m pretty sure we can get it out of her now. She’s in the room with Chassis, and Gauge isn’t here.”
I don’t ask any details about why she’s here, but Gauge isn’t. It doesn’t matter. Right now, all that matters is getting to the bottom of this and finding out how much fucking shit our club is in with these goddamn Russians. Because I think we’re in some shit, but I have a feeling it’s a lot deeper than I’m willing to allow myself to speculate right now.
“Let’s find out what the fuck is going on,” Dare growls.
He spins around, and I follow behind him, though I hang back when he enters the hospital room just in case there’s something going on in there Chassis doesn’t want me to see. I hear Dare’s voice murmur, then he grunts before he sticks his head out of the room.
“Come on in.”
Slipping into the room, I smile at the sight of Chassis and the baby. I only saw him briefly yesterday, and they were both exhausted, so we didn’t stay long. Chassis still appears exhausted, but she’s smiling.
“Where’s Keely?” she asks.
Giving her a smile as well, I run my fingers through my hair. “We were planning on coming this afternoon. This was more of a business call,” I state.
Her gaze flicks from me to Dare, and then realization dawns on her. “Oh,” she murmurs. “Do you need to leave?” she asks, focusing on Dare.
I answer for him. “No, actually, I wanted to speak with Heleni, if that’s possible?”
Heleni’s whole body shifts around to face me, but it’s almost as if she floats in the seat. She has a completely ethereal vibe unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. It would surprise me if she wasn’t growing her own green and smoking it… regularly.
“Me?” she asks.
I could beat around the bush, but what’s the point? I’ve got other shit to do today, and a woman and baby to go home to—then pack them up and come back here. So I’m going to have to be direct.
“Do you know anything about any dealings with the Russian Mafia and Gauge’s group?”
