The whole drive home, Margot had wanted to ask Damon what he’d found in her car because he had found something. The steely look in his eyes and the way his mouth was set in grim lines had her keeping the questions locked down, though.
Not long after he returned, all the guys had gone into a meeting, and considering he’d come from checking out her car, she figured she had to be the topic of conversation.
She should’ve been annoyed that they were talking about her without her being present, but after the email she’d received, she was happy to be kept in the dark.
Now, though, she’d had time to think about it all, she had questions, and she wouldn’t settle for one-word answers. She wanted comprehensive ones.
As they pulled up to Damon’s house, she noticed the vans in his driveway, blocking them from getting to the garage. She recognized the signage on the vehicles, as they’d come to her place not long after her ordeal with Camille. “Are you getting a security system put in?”
“Yep.” Damon pulled onto the front lawn.
“Why?”
“It was time.” Damon got out before she could ask anything else, but if he thought the conversation was over, he was very mistaken.
There had to be a reason for him to all of a sudden put in a security system, and it was time was not the reason.
He opened the door, and this time, she ignored his outstretched hand and got out by herself, brushing past him and marching toward the wide-open front door.
As she crossed the threshold, she didn’t bother to acknowledge or make small talk to the man who was tapping on a tablet. Was it rude? Probably. Did she care? Nope.
She would sit and wait until they’d all left before she went and hashed this out with Damon.
Reaching the sanctuary of her room, she closed the door, gazed at the ceiling, and followed the decorative crown molding to see if there had been any cameras placed in her room.
Her room.
It wasn’t hers; she was a guest. Yet, after only living with Damon for a short time, she’d considered it her room, and she needed to stop. Hopefully soon, it would all be over and she would be able to go back to her little unit which fit her perfectly and was all hers. Where everything in it had been planned and thoughtfully purchased.
Sighing, she changed out of her work clothes and into some sweats and her fluffy pink sweater. Comfort clothes, because what was about to come was going to be anything but comfortable.
She sat in the middle of her bed, and grabbed her e-reader. She had no idea how long the workmen would be here for, but she wasn’t coming out until they were gone. She didn’t trust herself that she would be able to control her tongue, and the last thing she wanted was to have it out with Damon in front of a group of strangers.
They didn’t need to know her and Damon’s business. They especially didn’t need to know that someone was following her.
What if the person who was after her was on the team working on the house?
What if they’d rigged the system so they could get the feed as well?
As it was, she hadn’t been safe here after all.
Margot tossed her e-reader onto the mattress and flopped back against the pillows. She was allowing her mind to run away with itself, and she was beginning to catastrophize everything going on in her life.
There could be a completely valid reason for why Damon was getting a security system installed. He could’ve organized it all before she moved in. Given that he hadn’t mentioned anything to her about it happening, she doubted that was the case.
Being around so many former military personnel, she’d often heard them talk about trusting their instincts, and she was going to do that now—trust that she was the reason why men were installing cameras and alarm systems.
Surprisingly the thought of it didn’t freak her out. The anxiety that had been slowly eating at her since the day she was taken and shot hadn’t completely gone, it still lurked deep within her, but it didn’t take up a lot of her thoughts.
Was it because she had always felt safe around Damon, that living with him was helping her? Which would be great, but then again, what happened when she moved back to her own place? Would she go back to how she was, where she freaked out at the slightest thing?
Even at work she was now more relaxed than she had been the last few months.
A knock sounded at the door, and she sat up, happy for the interruption, as her thoughts were going around in circles and off on tangents that weren’t helpful for her.
Sliding off the bed, she padded over to the door and opened it to find Damon on the other side. He’d changed into a black T-shirt that clung to him like a second skin. If she looked closely, she was sure she could see the outline of his six pack that she knew existed beneath the thin fabric. He was also wearing gray sweats that left little to the imagination. It was criminal how good he looked.
“Did you want something?” she asked, gripping the door and making sure that she kept her gaze on his face and not his groin area.
