Damon slid the phone across the table. “The picture is of Margot at the grocery store near my house. You can see my back as I enter the store in front of her.”
Dread filled her as the enormity of what he said sunk in. She’d thought she was safe at Damon’s place, but it was clear that she wasn’t.
Where could she go now?
Chapter
Fourteen
“Have you got anything yet?” Damon hovered behind Wilt as his fingers flew over the keyboard, and the screen was filled with code that he didn’t understand, but trusted his friend could decipher it all.
“Just like when you asked me a minute ago, the answer is still not yet.” Wilt stopped typing and looked up at him. “I get what you’re feeling, but if you keep fucking hovering, then I’m not going to get anything done.”
Damon scraped a hand down his face. “Sorry. You’re right. I’ll leave you to it.”
“I know you’ve been really careful in terms of looking out for Margot since she moved into your place. But this asshole knows more than he should. Have you checked over her car?”
It took a few seconds before he caught on to what Wilt was suggesting. “Fuck! No, I haven’t. You don’t think?”
“You never know. Not to mention, desperate people do desperate things. If they want something bad enough, they’ll do whatever they have to do to achieve it.”
“I’ll check her car when we get home.” Damon slapped his leg in frustration. “I can’t believe I didn’t even consider something like that. It makes sense now how they knew where Margot was all the time.”
“We don’t know for sure that a tracker has been put on her car,” Wilt reasoned.
“Yet you wouldn’t have suggested it if you didn’t think it was a possibility. How else would the person know where she was now? I’ve done everything possible to keep her safe. I know we haven’t been followed.”
“Who drove when you went to the supermarket?”
Damon sighed. “Margot. She was tired of being driven everywhere and said she wanted to.”
“So, it was possible you guys were followed, and she didn’t see anyone, or didn’t think to check.”
“Yeah, and I wasn’t paying attention, either. Fuck, I should’ve been.”
“Stop beating yourself up about it. You’re allowed to relax.”
Not when the life of the woman he cared for was in danger. He should’ve been on alert all the time.
He couldn’t wait until he got home to check her car, he needed to know now. “I’ve got to go.”
Wilt nodded, as if he guessed exactly what he was doing. “I’ll let Steve know. What are you going to say to Margot?”
Yep, Wilt knew what he was going to do. “The truth. I’m not keeping anything from her.” Nothing good would come of him doing that. He didn’t want to keep her in the dark, not when her life depended on it.
“I’ll keep an eye on her. And I guess if what we suspect is true, then we know the photos weren’t taken by a drone, but by whoever is following and threatening her.”
Damon gave his friend a chin lift and thought over Wilt’s parting words. They weren’t comforting. They meant that the person had multiple chances to hurt Margot, but they hadn’t.
Why hadn’t they?
What was their end goal?
More importantly, why Margot?
Those were questions he would answer later on, when he had time to think it through carefully.
Margot was on the phone, her voice light, and a soft smile played across her lips. She looked beautiful and innocent and young. He hated that these things were happening to her.
