“I'll turn it down.”
“Please do.”
“Absolutely, officers.”
They leave. I close the door.
Lean against it. And start laughing.
I laugh until tears run down my face.
Then somewhere along the way, I'm not laughing anymore.
Fuck.
I slide down the door.
Because this is ridiculous.
I'm ridiculous.
I don't cry over men. I don't get drunk alone and sing badly enough that law enforcement becomes involved.
I definitely don't sit on the floor in one fuzzy sock crying over a man who accused me of betraying him.
But apparently I do now.
Because I love him.
There's no escaping it.
No amount of rum changes it. No amount of anger erases it.
Mitchell hurt me.
Badly.
And I still fucking love him. Which feels deeply unfair. There's another knock.
“Oh, come on!”
I scramble upright.
“I turned it off!”
The knocking continues.
“I said I'm sorry!”
I yank open the door.
Carolina stands there. Dani is beside her. Annabeth is behind them.
All three stare at me. I stare back.
Carolina's gaze travels slowly from my hair to my sleep shirt to my single sock to the blender pitcher I'm apparently still carrying.
“Wow.”
