“What are you doing?” she whispers.

“Feeling.”

The word lands between us. Simple. Terrifying. The most honest thing I’ve said since I told her we had time.

“I don’t know how to do this without the—” She stops. Swallows. “Without the urgency. Every time we’ve touched it was because the clock was running or the adrenaline was screaming or one of us was about to die.”

“There’s no clock.”

“I know.” Her voice cracks on the second word. “That’s what scares me.”

I kiss her.

Not the way I kissed her against the steel door — desperate, starving, the kiss of a man who thought he might die. This is slow. Deliberate. My mouth finds hers the way a river finds the sea — not rushing, just arriving. Because it was always going to arrive here. Because every room and every chain and every corridor was leading to this bed in this house where my brother burns eggs and a woman I was never supposed to love is sitting beside me with bruised knuckles and a cracked-open heart.

She kisses me back. Slowly at first — testing, tasting, the careful exploration of a woman who has learned that mouths lie and hands take and the body is a tool that gets deployed and discarded. Then the slowness breaks. Her hand fists in my shirt. Her other hand finds the back of my neck and her fingers dig into the muscles there and the sound she makes against my mouth is raw and wanting and it goes through me like a blade made of heat.

I ease her jacket off. The burn scars. I see them every time and every time the sight hits me the same way — not with analysis but with a fury so pure it feels like devotion. Someone burned this woman. The flames ate through her skin before she could get clear. And the scars healed in the shape of survival because Isadora Ferretti survives everything except tenderness.

I press my mouth to the scar at the crest of her left shoulder. She goes rigid.

“Dante—”

“Stay.”

I trace the scar with my lips. The raised tissue, the rough terrain of a wound that healed without a doctor because the woman who carried it couldn’t afford questions. Her breathing goes ragged. Her hand in my shirt tightens.

“No one’s ever—” She can’t finish. The sentence dies in her throat and the dying is its own confession. No one has ever touched these scars with tenderness. No one has ever put their mouth on the damage and stayed.

I stay. I trace every scar my mouth can reach — her shoulder, the ridge along her upper back, the rough patch near her spine where the burn went deepest. Her hands are in my hair now, pulling, not pushing. Holding me against the damage instead of holding me away from it.

Her fingers find the hem of my shirt. Pull it up. Her hands map my chest — the bruises fading green and yellow, the ribs wrapped in Costa’s gauze, the skin that carries her mouth from four hours ago. She traces the bruise line the way I traced her scars. Deliberately. With the focused intensity of a woman who has been touching bodies for twenty years and is, for the first time, touching one because she wants to and not because someone contracted the wanting.

Her palm rests flat over my heart. My pulse hammers against her hand. Not steady. Not controlled. The rhythm of a man who has spent his life converting feeling into something manageable and is, right now, letting the feeling stay feeling.

This is the whole goddamn point. Every room, every pattern, every silent second I spent watching the world at the frequency my father’s house taught me — it was building toward this. The capacity to sit on a bed with a woman’s hand on my heart and feel everything and not flinch.

Feeling is not failure. It is the highest thing I’m capable of. And the woman whose hand is on my chest is the reason I know that.

Her mouth finds mine again and this time there is no slowness left.

My hands are on her hips, pulling her into me. Her thigh swings over mine and she’s in my lap straddling me, her weight settles against me and my cock is hard and pressing against her through fabric. Her fingers work my belt. My hands slide up her thighs — the heat burning through my palms.

“Tell me what you want,” I say against her neck. “No mission. No adrenaline. Just you telling me.”

She pulls back enough to look at me. Her eyes are dark. Blown wide. Her lips swollen from my mouth. She is the most terrifying and beautiful thing I have ever seen.

“You,” she says. “Just you. Without the countdown.”

I lift her shirt over her head.

She raises her arms and the fabric slides up and off, and she's not wearing a bra, and her breasts are full and heavy and her nipples are already tight, peaked, the color of dusky rose against her olive skin. I take one in my mouth.

She gasps. The sound is sharp, uncontrolled, nothing like the calculated silence she maintains in every other room. Her fingers thread through my hair and grip, holding me there, and I suck hard. The nipple tightens further against my tongue, pebbled and hot, and I pull, and her back arches, pressing her breast deeper into my mouth. I soften the suction, then graze my teeth across the peak, and she shudders — a full-body tremor that starts in her shoulders and moves through her torso and ends in her hips, which grind down against my cock.

A low moan escapes her throat. Not performed. Not shaped. Just pulled out of her.

My hand cups her other breast. The weight of it fills my palm, heavy and warm, and I thumb the nipple, circling slowly, feeling it bead tighter under the friction. I switch sides, giving the same attention, the same slow reverence, and her grip in my hair tightens until it stings. She's breathing in short, shallow pulls, her chest rising and falling against my mouth, and when I close my teeth around the nipple and tug gently, she says my name.
