"Accepted."

One word claims the house without begging for the title that once defined him.

Then his hand closes around mine.

His fingers are large enough to cover my knuckles. Claws angle away from my skin as he laces our hands together in full view of the Council, Korgath's former allies, the hostile Matrons, and every human pressed against the walls.

The contact silences the nearest galleries.

Reactions spread outward.

The iron-grey guard from my apothecary lowers his spear in acknowledgment. A Trolvor merchant bows his beaked head. Several Soz'garoth watch with open calculation, already measuring the value of trade with the new house.

Others turn away.

The western vents lord leaves his bench without bowing. Two Volvath women hiss the word breeder as they pass behind the gallery rail. The gold-capped Matron grips her staff and refuses to look at me.

No universal welcome follows.

The court has not mistaken a ruling for affection.

Zira strikes her staff once more.

"Let the storm-court witness House Obsidius-Ferryman and the equal standing of its founders under Council law."

Founder.

Partner.

Not possession.

Draxon holds my hand while the words become public record.

The law cannot make the court value me. It cannot erase contempt from demons who believe my humanity marks me as lesser.

It can name what we fought to build.

For the first time, Galmoleth's law recognizes that I stand beside Draxon by right.

DRAXON

One month after the Council names House Obsidius-Ferryman, the storm-court enters our spire beneath two joined seals.

The Obsidius horn remains on the left side of the main arch. Beatrix's apothecary mark has been cut into the right, a mortar crossed by three metallic leaves. Between them, new silver script records the name the court resisted and the Council recognized.

House Obsidius-Ferryman.

The formal gathering occupies the southern main hall. Black pillars rise around tables set with nabella spice, bitter kaffo, and rirzed wine. Metallic flora grows from long beds between the pillars, arranged in ranks of bronze, silver, and gold. Storm-light flashes through the high glass while red dust gathers beyond reinforced seals.

Ozone mixes with drying herbs from the open solarium doors.

Beatrix's apothecary stands beyond those doors in a place every arriving noble must pass.

The room has not been hidden among service levels or confined behind breeder quarters. Its silver-leaf sign faces the main hall. Shelves of goligan, fylvek grass, nimond beans, and sealed remedies remain visible from the gathering. Jory works at the central table beneath Beatrix's instructions, while Miana Vence directs servants carrying orders to the trade desk.

The design was Beatrix's demand.
