We remain like that while the storm gives way to the pale edge of dawn.

The archive door resists me until I put my shoulder against it.

Ancient stone grinds over ancient stone. Dust rolls through the opening in a grey cloud, carrying the dry bitterness of old scrolls and oxidized metal. I step inside before the door can decide to close again.

Vulmar waits beyond three leaning shelves.

He sits at a black table surrounded by open record cases and weighted parchment. Age has dulled his chalk-white carapace without weakening his broad frame. Dark resin fills battle gouges across his shoulders and chest. His thick horns curve backward in gnarled ridges.

One claw traces the scar along his left forearm while he reads.

"You are late," he says.

"The door attempted to keep me out."

His red eyes lift. "It has sound judgment."

"Draxon sent me."

"Then its judgment exceeds his."

I close the door with both hands. "He said you would help me study the laws governing my position."

"He said you would arrive with questions and insufficient patience for the answers."

"That sounds more likely."

Vulmar gestures toward the chair opposite him.

It is large enough for a Volvath and places my chin barely above the table. I remain standing instead. The decision earns a quiet scrape of his claw over the scar.

The records chamber occupies the spire's oldest inner level. Shelves climb into shadow, packed with obsidian slates, metal cylinders, bone tablets, and scrolls bound in wire. Ceiling channels provide dim blue light. No window admits the storm, yet red dust covers laws written before most of Ti'lith's spires were grown.

Draxon's advice came before dawn.

He lay beside me and warned that Korgath would attack through law if sabotage failed. Learn every rule they use to define you, he said. A cage is strongest when its captive mistakes the bars for the whole structure.

The intimacy of the night remains in my body, but I refuse to give it shape inside this room. The archive holds enough dangerous things without memory adding another.

"Where do we begin?" I ask.

Vulmar pushes a narrow slate toward me. "With what the Council declared you to be."

Crimson letters brighten beneath its polished surface.

I read the heading. "House-assigned human breeder."

"A legal category, not a description."

"I know the difference."

"Most Volvath do not."

The slate lists provisions for residence, food, medical care, conception records, inheritance through children, and the authority of the assigned house. Humans receive protections only where damage would reduce their value or threaten a future lineage. Choice appears nowhere.
