Bonded To The Arena Master

“No.”

The answer is calm.

I rise behind the desk.

Beatrix has to tilt her head to meet my gaze. She does so without retreating. The size difference should make argument pointless. Demon hierarchy teaches that physical power and rank settle disputes before they begin.

Beatrix has never respected lessons that fail under examination.

“You mistake this for another Council proceeding,” I say. “Inside this spire, my word governs.”

“Then your word should serve your house.”

“It does.”

“Keeping me idle in an upper room does not.”

“It keeps you alive.”

“Alive and useless.”

Her voice remains controlled, but color rises along her neck. Silver dust marks the fabric near her left ankle. One fragment of lolean petal has caught in the seam.

“Explain,” I say.

The command surprises her. She expected another refusal, perhaps followed by guards carrying her upstairs. I considered it. Force would establish obedience for the length of the journey and destroy any chance of receiving it voluntarily afterward.

Beatrix folds her arms.

“The court watched the Council assign you a human breeder who immediately defied the ceremony. If I disappear into your upper rooms, they will decide one of two things. Either you cannot control me, or you are ashamed to display what they gave you.”

“Their conclusions do not govern my house.”

“Their trade, alliances, and gossip affect it.”

“You have spent one morning among the storm-court.”

“I have spent 29 years beneath it.”

The correction lands cleanly.

Humans know the reach of noble houses through ration changes, market tolls, and the sudden disappearance of people assigned elsewhere. Beatrix may lack access to Council chambers, but she has lived with the consequences of decisions made inside them.

“Continue,” I say.

“An idle breeder consumes household resources and produces nothing until she conceives. That makes me a liability, especially when no child can be guaranteed. An apothecary treats your servants, reduces lost labor, and brings trade into the spire.”

“The Soz’garoth provide healing.”

“They provide magic.”

“An observation without distinction.”

“Magic can numb the pain from a vespid sting. My remedies neutralize the venom. Magic can force an exhausted body to continue working. My tonics address why it is exhausted. Your sorcerers can close a wound while leaving filth trapped inside it. I can prevent the rot that follows.”

Her confidence is not empty pride. The Council’s records identified her trade as one reason for selecting her. She supports herself in a district where humans possess little coin and less protection. Dark elf servants seek her remedies despite the danger of trading beyond their houses.

Useful work created the independence the Council took from her this morning.
