The Way We Were Always Meant To Be

“I don’t think I am. Cuffs are in the truck. Kiss me…like you mean it and show everyone that you’re mine.”
He doesn’t have to ask me twice.
I’m pushing myself up to lay a sweet and sexy kiss on him when I hear, “Why, Sheriff Abbott, are ya datin’ Miss Kerrigan now?”
Now?
This man hasn’t dated in centuries.
Glancing over at our inconvenient distraction, I find Fallon King, Layla’s best friend, and the biggest trouble stirrer in town.
She goes head-to-head with Agnes and Maebelle any chance she gets. She’ll fight for her friends to find love, she’ll drink herself into a stupor at the bar, dance the night away with zero qualms or worries, and she’s freedom in a bottle.
No one can tell this woman what to do.
No one can tame her in any way.
She is the bravest woman I’ve ever met, and she’s lived that way her whole life in Magnolia Ridge.
“Hey, Adeline,” she greets with a pretty smile. Her blue eyes sparkling with excitement that I nabbed myself a beau, and it’s Dodger. “I can’t say I didn’t see this comin’ a mile away.”
“How?”
I can’t help but ask the question. Because how many other people have thought the same?
“Psychic.”
I roll my eyes with a smirk. “That’s nonsense.”
“Say that when y’all get married within the year.”
I openly gape at her because what?
“How’s it going?” Dodger asks, sounding as if he’s careful with his next words for some reason. “Ya doin’ alright?”
Fallon smiles at him, but it’s weak at best. “Doin’ alright. Meetin’ Zoe at the beer tent.”
“I’d say behave, but I’m off duty tonight.”
She chuckles, almost diabolically, and I’ve always liked Fallon. At times, I wish I were more headstrong and fearless like she is. “Who’s on?”
“Bowen.”
“Ah…” She doesn’t add on to that, but I can see her planning something in that smart head of hers. “June McLourey around?”
“Fallon,” I lightly warn her. “Ya know how June is.”
“A pain in the ass?”
Yes.
“Don’t break them up,” Dodger lightly chides. “They’re doin’ good now.”
“They’re never good,” I pipe in. “June is always breakin’ up with him.”
“He likes her.”
Fallon and I both stare at Dodger because I don’t think he does.
