“You don’t get credit for every bad thing.”
Despite everything, a laugh almost escapes me.
She moves closer. “And you sure as fuck don’t get credit for me wanting you.”
There. The world narrows.
“Sage.”
“No.” She shakes her head. “You’ve been deciding what I should feel about you since the second this started.”
“This isn’t the time.”
“Apparently your murder farm disagrees.”
The Earth pulses.
I hate that she has a point.
“I know you’re scared.”
“I’m not scared.”
“Bullshit.” She presses her palm against my chest and everything stops.
Not the field.
Me.
“You’re terrified.”
“I watched Mercy die.”
“I know.”
“Do you?” I ask as I look at her. She’s a mess. Nothing like Mercy and everything like herself.
“I know,” she answers.
“Good.”
She starts to remove her hand and I catch it.
Big mistake.
Heat travels up my arm and the ground responds.
Roots shift. She feels it. Her breathing changes.
“No.”
She looks at me. “Was that for me or you?”
“Both.”
“Liar.”
“Sage.”
