My hand finds his, and his fingers close around mine. “What did you see?”
“I don’t want to say.”
“Please.”
She looks at Rhett first. “The Reaper gives his life.”
My pulse stutters.
Then she looks at Malakai. “The Tiller gives his body.”
His grip turns painful.
I don’t pull away.
Finally, Mariah looks at Ezra. “And the Sower…”
She can’t finish.
Ezra’s voice is quiet. “What does the Sower give?”
“I don’t know.”
“Mariah.”
“I couldn’t see it.” Her breathing turns uneven. “But Sage was screaming.”
My heartbeat kicks painfully against my ribs. “What?”
Ali presses a hand over her mouth. “You were begging him not to do it.”
I turn toward Ezra.
He’s already looking at me. “What was I begging him not to do?”
“We don’t know,” Ali says. “We could only hear you.”
Mariah drags in a shaky breath. “Then the field opened.”
“What do you mean?”
“The ground split apart in front of the table.”
“And then?”
Her eyes meet mine. “You went into it.”
A strange numbness spreads through me.
Me.
Not them.
Me.
“What do you mean I went into it?”
“You walked straight toward the hole.”
