Twisted Vows

His jaw tightens. “This used to belong to someone else.”

My words slip out unbidden. “Did you kill him to get it?”

He stops, and when he turns, his eyes are colder than an Alaska February.

He closes the distance between us until he’s towering over me.

“Don’t speak about things you don’t understand.” His voice is soft and lethal.

My mouth clamps shut, and I retreat without realizing it. I keep going until my back hits the wall.

When his hand slams beside my head, I flinch. His eyes blaze with so much anger that my mouth goes dry. He doesn’t touch me. Only swivels around and leads me to a set of double doors.

“Your room. The staff will bring whatever you need.”

He’s about to leave.

“Wait.”

He stops, but he doesn’t face me.

“Why all this?” I gesture at the elegant room. “Why not throw me in another cell? Why not make this as cruel as possible?”

His hand grips the doorframe, and his shoulders tense, but he finally pivots. For a second—just a heartbeat—a raw, unguarded emotion crosses his face. “Sleep well,” he mutters, and then he’s gone.

My heart hammers. I saw the change in his expression. And God help me, I feel the same.

I sink onto the velvet chair, pressing my hand to my chest to settle my racing heart. This was supposed to be a fake, survival-oriented deal. But the way he just looked… The way my pulse jumps when he’s near…

I’m in trouble.

The mirror shows a stranger dressed in a wedding dress, with perfect hair and flushed cheeks. A girl who’s falling for her captor, who’s stuck in this big room.

A woman with a kind face and dark hair enters. She stares at me for a second before slowly approaching me.

“I’m Arya, your primary maid. I was sent by Nonna Rosa.” She wrings calloused hands that speak of years of service.

“Welcome, Arya.”

“Thank you.” She nods and motions to the space. “Fresh clothes in the closet. Toiletries in the bathroom. Meals brought wherever you prefer. We’re discreet and won’t get in your way.”

I nod, thanking her again.

After she leaves, I stay seated, still in the dress. My mind drifts back to the moment Enzo told me we were getting married. My lips still tingle from where his fingers traced them.

Worse, part of me wanted more.

I stare at the closed door, wondering if he’s gone to Izzy. There’s clearly something between them, and she’d be easier and more familiar with his world.

My chest constricts as I imagine him with her, his hands on her skin, his lips on her neck as she moans his name. I shut my eyes and shake my head to rid my mind of the image.

He said he wasn’t interested in me because he knows where to get his desires fulfilled.

I curl up on the bed, my limbs stiff and my mind racing with one thought on repeat.

What the hell just happened to my life?
