She Walks with Broken Things

Rafe came through behind me and London followed.

I stopped in the foyer. “Where is she?”

“Sitting room,” Vivienne answered.

She stood near the staircase, arms wrapped tightly around herself.

“Doctor?”

“DeLuca’s on his way?”

“You trust them?”

“Him.” London answered. “More than any other.”

I nodded. Still didn’t like it. “Hospital would be faster.”

“No.”

The answer came sharp. I looked at her. Vivienne held my stare.

“You put Bethany in an emergency department surrounded by strangers, fluorescent lights, locked doors and people touching her without permission and we’ll lose whatever part of her is still here.”

She was right.

I fucking hated that she was right.

“How long?”

“Eight minutes,” London answered.

I nodded. “Fine.”

My gaze moved toward the sitting room. Nyssa was in there. I could see part of her through the doorway. Sitting on the floor. Bethany sitting beside her. Nyssa wasn’t touching her. Just sitting. Close enough if Bethany reached and far enough that she didn’t have to.

Something tightened inside me. “Has she said anything else?”

Vivienne shook her head. “Nyssa.”

Only Nyssa.

I looked away. “Rafe.”

“Already on it.” He lifted his phone.

“Knox is pulling everything within six miles. Falcon’s widening the physical search. Ghost and Brick are back at the road.”

“Good.”

It didn’t feel good.

Nothing fucking did.

The doctor arrived seven minutes later. He just walked in like he’d done this many times before. A murmur to Guild at the door. A nod to London and a careful glance toward me. He knew.

He didn’t walk into the sitting room. Good. He spoke to Vivienne first. I caught the questions.

“Previous history. Has the Daughter done this before.”
