His fingers bruising as he drove himself inside.
And stayed.
A hard exhale.
Then low… and slow.
A moan came from him.
His grip eased instantly as though the animal in him protected me… from himself.
But I clenched my legs around him as he reached for me, sliding his hands along my back and pulled me against him. I tried to breathe as I wrapped my arms around him.
But he was just as gone as I was, burying his face into my neck.
“Jesus Christ, Nyssa.” He moaned. “No one… no one has ever made me feel like that.”
My pulse boomed with his words.
“I come apart around you. I can’t think straight. I don’t know if I’m going insane. All I know is… I don’t want it to end. You… you undo me, Nyssa, and I want it all.”
His arms tightened.
Like he could hold me here forever.
Like he’d never let me go.
The strange thing was…
I wasn’t looking for a way out anymore.

Rain hammered the roof of the car hard enough to drown the city. Rafe drove. I worked. Or at least tried to. Property records played out on my cell. Routes mapped. Financial transfers outlined by one of the many investigators I had working for me exclusively. Men who hunted for a living. They hunted for me. Reports and records played out. The kind of information that usually held my attention without effort. Today it may as well be spoken in another language.
I skipped to the next report.
Nothing.
Then skipped again.
Nothing.
The scent of rain drifted through the crack in the window. My grip tightened.
Firelight. The memory came without warning.
A flicker.
A flash.
Not darkness this time.
Light. Gold. Soft. For one impossible second I saw her again.
Nyssa.
