Heartbreak Baby

Though now that I’ve cleared things up with Goldie, what Grant did bursts back to the forefront of my mind right alongside the raging inferno of anger knowing he marked her skin.

Yeah, there’s something else I’d like to beat the shit out of, and I turn back to Goldie because now I need to know something very fucking important. “Do you know where I can find Grant?”

Her eyes close and her head falls back. “Damn, you didn’t forget about the rest, huh?”

“Goldie.”

She lifts her head and eyes me. “Because he grabbed me, or because you just found out he might be the father?”

“The baby isn’t why I’m going.” I lean forward and brace my forearms on my thighs, forcing myself to keep my voice level. “If he wants a test, his lawyer can deal with ours and figure out how to make that happen. I’m going because he put his fucking hands on you.”

“Oh,” Ellie says, sitting up with a gleam in her eye. “So you’re going to beat on him a little?”

I glance at her then back at Goldie. “I’m not going to beat on him a little.”

“Uh-huh.” Ellie nods. “So a lot then.”

Colston coughs out a laugh, and I side-eye him. I can’t really argue with any of them when my blood pressure’s been sky high since I saw the marks Grant put on Goldie’s skin. And Colston knows me well enough to know I’m not gonna just let that shit slide, no matter how calm I look on the outside.

“What?” He holds up both hands. “I’m staying out of it.” He manages to keep a straight face for maybe half a second. “Unless you need backup.”

Then he grins at me, all straight white teeth and absolutely no remorse. He’d be there in a second if I gave him any sort of signal I wanted him there. But no, I need to do this on my own.

Goldie looks between the three of us and drags a hand over her face. “If you insist on doing this, I really have no idea where he might be. I don’t know where he lives now. But if I had to guess, work maybe?”

I blow out a breath, trying to rein in the surge of anticipation burning through my veins. “Okay. Where does he work?”

She stares at me for a second like she’s considering whether refusing to answer will accomplish anything. It will not.

“Privilege.”

Colston’s eyebrows go up. “That douchey club downtown?”

“That’s the one.” Goldie looks back at me. “If he’s working, his car will be in the employee lot behind the building. It’s a silver BMW.”

“He would drive a BMW,” Colston mutters.

I shift forward to get up, but Goldie reaches over and catches my chin, turning my attention back to her. “Don’t get thrown in jail, Maverick.”

I’m careful about the way I respond so I don’t make any promises I can’t keep. “I’ll do my best.”

Goldie gives me a flat look. “Should I start Googling bail bondsmen or…?”

I smirk a little. “Nah, that’s why we have Jenny.”

He flips me off. “I’m not an ATM, asshole.”

She lets out a little laugh and crosses her arms, and I’m happy to see a little color come back into her cheeks and a little of that fire that makes Goldie who she is. “We would never take money from you.” She looks back at me. “And we won’t need to because he’s not getting arrested.”

“I’m just going to talk to him.”

From across the room, Colston says, “I’ll check the freezer for peas.” He gets up and heads into the kitchen.

Goldie glares after him. “Colston.”

“What? He can’t have his hands swollen for work.”

“We don’t have peas,” I tell him. “There’s an ice pack in the door.”
