He pulled away from the curb and I spent the next fifteen minutes guessing. Restaurant? No. Concert? No. Some kind of show? No.

When we finally pulled into the parking lot, I stared through the windshield. “No.”

Nash smiled. “Yes.”

It was the speed-dating venue. The same place where I had first met him.

I looked back at the building. “You’re corny.”

“I knew you were going to say that.”

“This is very corny.”

“You’re smiling, though.”

He got out and I followed. “This better not be another speed-dating event.”

“You think I brought you here to find another man?”

“You have surprised me before.”

I laughed and followed him inside. The place looked different when no one was desperately trying to determine whether thirty strangers were marriage potential.

The little bar was open and the music was low. Most of the tables had been rearranged and Nash nodded toward one near the back. It was the same table we’d sat at.

I stared at it. “You remember?”

“Of course.”

We sat and the server brought wine.

I looked at Nash. “You planned this?”

“No, I broke in earlier and arranged everything.”

“Smart-ass.”

He smiled. For a while, we talked about nothing. Mainly about work and his son Eli. Klair sent Nash pictures of some massive Lego sculpture she claimed she was making for my office, despite me repeatedly telling her absolutely not. Just talking about normal, good shit.

Maybe that was why I loved being with him. Nothing had to explode for me to feel something. I didn’t have to wait for a phone to ring or wonder who was calling. I never watched the clock and asked when he was leaving. Every moment didn’t come with an invisible deadline.

I realized Nash had gotten quiet, so I looked up. “What?”

He shook his head. “Nothing.”

“No. You’ve been staring at me.”

He took a sip of wine. “Maybe I like looking at you.”

“Creep.”

He smiled. “I’m falling in love with you.”

My heart stopped and I stared at him. “You sure?”

His eyebrows lifted. That was apparently not the response he expected.

“Am I sure?”
