A slow, mean smile appeared. “Oh! You thought you were special?”

I felt my eyes water.

Ravenna nodded. “Of course you did.”

“He said—”

“I don’t give a fuck what he said.”

Her voice cracked through the room. I looked away.

“No, look at me.”

I did.

“You knew he had a wife.”

“Yes.”

“You knew there was a woman in the house.”

“Yes.”

“And every time something didn’t make sense, you took his word over common fucking sense?”

My eyes filled.

Ravenna laughed. “God.”

She paced. “I almost feel sorry for you.”

My hands shook. “He showed me divorce paperwork.”

That got her attention. She turned. “What?”

“Attorney paperwork.”

Ravenna stared.

“Consultations. Emails. Everything.”

Her lips parted.

Then understanding crossed her face.

“That motherfucker has a cheating ass best friend who is a divorce attorney. I never received any of the shit because it wasn’t legit.”

For one brief second, we weren’t wife and mistress. We were two women realizing we’d been looking at different pages of the same lie.

“I told that cheating bitch that I was the one who needed space from him.”
